To preface this review I'm gonna give you a warning. This book is violent and unlike most stories I review, is based in fact. This adds an element of horror that you wouldn't usually find in nonfiction books. There are gruesome details that could be hard to stomach for some people. I was so appalled by the story I almost started crying as I was reading it. You will get upset and you should definitely know your limits before going into this, it may be interesting but it's horrifying.

Anyways, to the review now. I read this book in like two days, which is shocking since I literally freaking hate nonfiction most of the time. I definitely never would've even considered this book if I wasn't required to read a nonfiction book for English. But I settled on this one because it sounded interesting, and it was in a twisted way. Whether or not you've heard of the Borden Murders, you'll feel like you know everything about them after reading. The whole situation is very depressing and hard to wrap your mind around. However, Miller very well goes over it and makes it seem familiar, as well as adding in pieces of information that aren't common knowledge such as things we know today but didn't at the time. There are also excerpts of newspapers from the time to put the situation in perspective. In the end, if you think you can handle it, I recommend you at least consider this biography to get more of a glimpse of one of the worlds most infamous murder mysteries, one which to this day hasn't been solved.

Loved it! I have been fascinated with Lizzie Borden for as long as I can remember. Such an interesting read. It's hard to believe that the transcripts of the original trial are LOST! Innocent or guilty? I would love to go to Fall River, MA and view the historic sites. We will be reading this book for our yearly Battle of the Books.

I really enjoyed the amount of detail this book goes into. I’ve never gone that in depth into the Borden murders case, and this opened up my eyes to a lot of information I didn’t know even existed. It was a wonderful, unbiased and detailed book on the whole case. You should absolutely read this if you want to learn some important facts

A great look at the real story behind that childhood rhyme that somehow we all still learn... "Lizzie Borden took an axe..."
It's written for a more middle school reader but is really well written and well- paced. A must read for lovers of history/ mystery/ legal trials

Trigger warnings: murder, death of a parent, graphic descriptions of wounds, blood, xenophobia, vomit, sexism

A very informative and impartial look at the Borden case. It focuses very much on the events and the trial rather than the sensationalism or beliefs that have filtered through the decades. It doesn't paint Lizzie Borden as innocent but neither does it villainise her. It's very much just a "here are the facts" kind of a story, and I appreciated that.

But at the same time, there were - perhaps understandably, given that it's a historical case and the focus has always been on Lizzie - that the victims kind of...got lost. And I understand why, but it's also not the way I prefer my true crime.
