Twelve year old Maddie's scheme to have a secret sleepover with her friends ends with her waking up alone to a literal nightmare. Texts, calls and the news inform her that everyone has been evacuated; except her. Her mom thinks she's with her dad, and her dad thinks she's with her mom. Maddie must learn to survive with the help of books and a Rottweiler named George while facing natural disasters, looters and the loneliness of being the only person for miles.

This book was extremely well done. I've gotten a little tired of the end of the world dystopia novels but this one was different. Written in sporadic verse its really a survival tale of one young teen. It was well written and I enjoyed reading it. I'd recommend for someone who either likes verse, survival and adventure books.

This novel in verse for middle school readers is a page-turner.
It's a survival story with the feel of dystopia.
Often beautiful writing, the words just flow and you don't even realize you are reading a verse novel.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 for this novel in verse. Just wanting a night away from her family, Maddie and her friends plan a sleepover at her grandparents’ empty apartment. When her friends cancel, Maddie decides to stay alone. She wakes up to a slew of messages from her parents and friends - while she slept, the government declared “imminent danger” and evacuated everyone. Now alone with an aging dog as her companion, she must survive without power or a way to communicate with the rest of the world. How long will she be alone? Will her family ever come back? Highly recommend for grades 6+

Excellent dystopian novel in verse of survival and courage. I could not put it down!

While there are some weird plotting points (the looters, the break neck pacing in the back half, the swift and sudden ending), what ultimately sold me on rating it 4 stars was the beautiful writing and reflective tone. I most enjoyed Maddie's reflections on what family means as a kid of divorce, her exploration of poetry, and her determination to never give up hope. I love a good middle-grade book that doesn't look down on their target audience: it recognizes the ability, resilience, and power of kids.
