The concept was intriguing and I liked the format of the whole book being written in prose. Unfortunately, many points felt unrealistic which took away from my enjoyment. Also, be warned that there is a lot of animal death.

I enjoyed the book "Alone" by Megan E. Freeman so very much! First I want to say the cover is beautiful and fits the story perfectly. It makes you immediately want to find out why this girl is alone with just a dog. The main character Maddie acted, thought, and felt how a normal child in that situation would. Her mind cycled through all of these different emotions but she learned to grow and overcome all on her own. What Maddie had to do did not seem far fetched and what she had to deal with did not seem over the top. All of this added to her character being relatable as well as being likable. When Maddie did not know something she was smart and used the resources around her to learn in order to better her odds. I loved how much the library impacted her stay. She was able to use it to learn but also for enjoyment. I loved George so much, what a great companion to have! I liked the nod to the book "Island of the Blue Dolphins" especially in the beginning of the story when both kids gave their answer. Throughout the book we can see how Maddie's views change as she has to deal with isolation. I loved how the story was written, it had great pacing and a nice flow. Honestly, I don't have anything negative to say about this book. I really enjoyed it and I think there is a lot to be learned from Maddie and how she dealt with what happened to her.

Should you read "Alone"?
YES! Such an enjoyable and lovely survival story. Be warned, this story will make you feel so many different emotions which just adds to it being a perfect book. I read this book in one sitting because I had to find out what happened to Maddie. I hope other readers feel this same way.

Read this because it is a favorite of one of the middle school girls in my group. I am always amazed at books like this when authors can tell so much with so few words.

As a pre-teen I used to fantasize what would happen if I was left to do whatever I wanted in a ghost town. This book would have scratched that itch exactly. It slowly turns over many angles of what that would have been like.

From a parent perspective there are a couple swear words and a scene of violence to animals.

I loved this book. As a fan of Island of the Blue Dolphins, this was there perfect modern version and incredibly well-crafted. Such a wonderful book for fans of verse, strong female protagonists, and realistic fiction.

This book had a post apocalyptic feel without the fantasy that often accompanies many in this sub genre. It was very interesting to read a book in this setting from a pre-teen's point of view. If I ever found myself in the situation of Maddie at that age, I wouldn't have fared nearly so well.

This book wasn't a surface level plot-driven middle grade novel. It had depth and heart. I'd recommend trying Freeman's work.

Read this book out loud to my 10 year old. Loved that it was a story in verse. It spurred a lot of discussion.
