This book was frustrating. Tessa comes from a magical family but has lived in the mundane world for awhile - yet somehow she vacillates between knowing nothing about magic to info dumping about it and being decent using it.

Both Tessa and her potential love interest seem to be rage filled - him insulting her mother at first meeting and her screaming in his face repeatedly. Plus several other characters seemed blasé about their casual violence. It just over the top for me. This seems to resolve at the end - I'm not sure if I will continue.

I did enjoy her aunts, her vampire sidekick.

I liked the storyline of this book but I thought the main character was a little immature. Her little remarks towards people when she was upset got really old & I felt like I was constantly rolling my eyes. She's supposed to be 28-29 years old but acts and talks like she's 18-19 years old.

I'm a sucker for a witch story, especially one that involves a younger witch living with older aunties in a magic house. That said, the main character is the very common annoyingly sarcastic type whose natural talent/power keeps her alive despite a lack of knowledge and experience after she makes dangerously impulsive decisions. Her hate "chemistry" with the local sheriff is another common trope, as is her friendship with the quirky half-vampire. I could leave the former, but I enjoy the sidekick banter of the latter. I'm hoping that the character and her relationships grow in complexity, as well as that she actually has to expend some effort to learn magic and be forced to be more cognizant of the costs (since a steep cost to dark magic is mentioned but never actually seems to significantly affect the main character or her choices).

I was very disappointed in this book. It had all the makings to be a mix of practical magic and Stephanie Plum but it fell completely flat. The MC was irritating and acted more like a 12 year old than a grown woman and the main enemy/mystery was not very compelling. Lastly the main love interest had nothing throughout the book to redeem him and suddenly we are supposed to like him at the end - and I’m sorry but a gorilla shifter kind of made me cringe. I wanted to like this book but I can’t.

Great read

Great read and a great start to the series, definitely want to read more. Want to find out how Tessa develops as she learns more about their magic, and ie have a feeling that Marcus will feature more!
