I’ve never read a book where the movie adaptation is actually a part of the overall story like this. It’s interesting.
This middle grade book had no right to be as cool as it was though

Eh... My niece wanted this book (and it's two sequels) for her birthday, but I had heard many terrible reviews. Rather than getting her all three at once, I got her the first book and decided to read it myself. (This is her first attempt at a book of this size, so I wanted to be prepared for questions. But it also was on my to-read list for myself.) Well, it's not horrible, but it's also not great.
Coming from Disney-Hyperion, I'm disappointed in the editing quality - I found multiple errors, but didn't think to mark them for counting later.
I think it's okay for a younger reader or less discerning reader, but I'm confused at the "see the movie for what happens next" ending. I was not pleased with that, but I guess it's a trade-off for not getting just a novelization of the movie.
The story was a "how the kids became friends - sort of" type and I suppose it explains the loose connections in the movie. They're not friends, but they're not super enemies at the start of the movie. This feels like an attempt to explain how they're there.
Eh, overall I wasn't impressed, but I'll watch the movie again, then read the next book, watch the next movie (because I was told it does the same thing with fitting between the movies) and then read the third book. If my niece still wants the other books after reading this one, I'll get them for her, but I'm not sure if I should considering the editing problems.

This book explores "after" the happily ever afters. What happens to the villains? Well, even if they died - they are brought back to life - to live on the Isle of the Lost. Twenty years later, their teenage children are stuck on the island and desperate for their parents' respect and for their own stories.
The Good:
- It is a really quick and enjoyable read.
- People like Evie, Jay, and Carols were likable.
- With all the Disney references, Disney fans will love it.
The Bad:
- Despite being the lead, I didn't find Mal that likable. Aside from the parents (none of whom were good parents) Mal was probably the least likable character.
- The Disney references can get really bad. Like just over done. I understand that this is based on the Disney films and not fairy tales, but it just gets overdone at a few points.
- Why would you bring dead people back to life, just to stick them on an island - that just gets leftovers and trash to live off of - for no reason. It almost seems cruel and evil.
The Meh:
- The overall story line was fine, but I don't think this has anything to do with the tv film. I'm guessing Disney wants to do a novel series or a tv series after the film, and this was all setting it up.

I read this book with my daughter. She loved the Descendant movie and this was a natural choice of book to read with her. My guess is if your kid liked the movie Descendant then they will like this book. I know my daughter did.
Its entretalning but nothing special. Carlos was my favorite in this one
It could've been better. I felt like there wasn't really a plot until the end. And, even then I was expecting so much to happen with just ten pages left, and then you realize the book is a prequel for the Disney channel movie it's based on. I'm just a little disappointed. It was entertaining and humorous, but the ending didn't win me over. The characters were nice and well developed. I'm gonna have to watch the movie in order to feel at peace with this story. But, I guess that's the point. All in all, it could've been better, but it wasn't bad.
I'm giving it 5 stars and that's the end of it.
I adored this book.
My 22 year old self was kinda worrried because this sounded like a new Ever After High, and I'm all about those.
But this was so much different and 100% cute.
I watched the movie recently under the pressure of my 14 and 12 year old cousins, who were singing "my love is r-i-d-i-c-u-l-o-u-s" and calling me "rotten to the core" without me understanding, and it was a really cute movie. So of course, I needed to grab the book.
And this is 10 times better!!!!
It follows the adventures of Mal, Jay, Evie and Carlos. Children of Maleficent, The Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella de Vil. And it will show us the first adventure the 4 had and how the became friends. The movie starts pretty much after the book ends so there's no weird time lapse or anything.
We can see glimpses of the "villains" life and watch the way they all live their family lives. Some of this really take a part when you look at the movie again.
I'm rambling, am i not? I just loved it so much. Go read it.

Honestly, this book reminds me of some kind of wattpad fanfiction. I did not like the writing and dreaded reading this book. My love for Desendants as a child saved this book from getting a one star rating. I'm not suprised that this book was bad, I guess I don't blame the author. She did her best.
I did like the multiple perspectives of each of the characters, I just think Ben shouldn't have been one of them.
However, it got a lot better at the end of the story, but I don't recommend it in the slightest.

Een leuk, grappig boekje voor tussendoor, waarvan de stijl me echt aan Disney doet denken!
Okay. I wanted to give 3.5 stars from an ADULT point of view but from a child or tween this DESERVES five stars.
I shook my head in disgust when pretty famous bookstagrammers pulled this novel to shreds. This novel is NOT written for adults or young adults but rather kids and teens and for that demographic this novel is great. It explains each Descendants origin story and parentage and opens up discussion topics for children such as the love of wealth (Jafar) material possession (Cruella) beauty (Evil Queen) and power (Maleficent) and how absolute corruption can and will corrupt absolutely.
It teaches children to value friendship, camaraderie, honour, making the right choice and most importantly - given the choice people can choose good over evil.
I highly recommend this novel to parents if you wish to discuss these prevalent topics with your child.
