This book celebrates enslavers, and that disquieting fact is hard to ignore.

Great historical fiction about the real-life Eliza Lucas Pickney who helped in the making of South Carolina’s industry. Following Eliza through her inheritance and her decisions regarding what to do with her family's land when she was constantly dismissed because she was a woman, had me picking up the book continuously wanting to know how it played out. Natasha incorporated the ugly and real truth about the slave trade very well and the monumental role the people played in the success of what was to become the indigo trade. I’m glad that the author was able to incorporate Eliza’s letters and prayers. It was a nice touch.

I am very leery of books that include enslaved people as secondary/background characters who simply exist to aide a white protagonist. It was uncomfortable to read about how Liza thought she was nice and kind to the people who lived in bondage to her. Also I did not enjoy the affect of dialect of Black characters in the audiobook which is not narrated by a Black narrator. This book feels out of touch and I’ve decided I will go learn about the history of indigo elsewhere.

I enjoyed this book a lot.  Eliza Lucas is a fascinating historical figure, and I love that someone has written her story as a novel.  My issue with it is that the book deals with slavery and the relationship between enslaveder and enslaved in a very modern way.  I feel that the author was so focused on making Eliza loveable, she took her out of the time she lived in and the view of the world Eliza would have had.  The anachronisms of it all pulled me out of the book several times. As a historian it bothered me.  It is still a good book, but I wish it was better about being honest with the slavery issues.
