The best way to describe how this book left me feeling is 'wanting to chew the wooden leg of my dining room table.' I could list off the writing choices I didn't love or wouldn't have made, but that doesn't stop the plot from being deeply compelling. The side characters are interesting and enjoyable (both the ones youre meant to like, the ones youre meant to hate, and the ones in between), and I found myself attached and rooting for the main characters fast. Would recommend.

Glad I went into this one blind. I probably wouldn’t have given it a chance if I read the synopsis. This book made me laugh, sob, and feel sick. I don’t know that I have been so invested in a whole cast of characters than the ones brought together in this story. I felt their excitement and successes along with their loss and despair.

While I was reading the first 50 pages of this book, I thought it might be my favorite book so far this year. I cried at one point. I loved the ideas that seemed to be popping up. The characters were interesting, witty, and well-rounded.

That didn't last. By the time I got halfway through the book, I was kind of bored. I had to make myself finish it, and although I still like the ideas of the book. I ended up not loving the dialogue, writing style, or structure.

I don't regret reading this, but it didn't live up to my high expectations.

Had a lot of potential. Emilio Sandoz' character and journey of faith is wonderful. Most of the other characters were unneccesary and the plotting was all over the place. The implication (more or less stated by the author later on) that New World missionaries were doing their best is disgusting.

A good tragedy compels us to read even when we know disaster is certain. Wonderful book, well designed alien world, lovable characters. The text is steeped in its themes and asks important questions about religion, faith, and despair. My only criticism is that it sort of skirts around colonialism and genocide in its discussion of history, although the Jesuit characters themselves at least would likely not acknowledge the role of missionaries in genocide.

Deus vult

Well. That was unexpected. I believe that this book was recommended on one of the few book or sci-fi sub-Reddits I frequent. Jesuits in space seemed like an interesting premise on its face and the book started about how I would’ve expected. But then it changed and then I couldn’t stop reading the book. The last couple hundred pages was like a boulder tumbling downhill - gaining speed and not stopping until there was nowhere left to go. Such a surprisingly great book; enough so that I’ll grab the next book in the series.
