Without a doubt the worst trash I've read in a long time. Yuck.
First things first, just like Game of Thrones, I watched the show first. And I loved the show; I’m even rewatching it right now. But I will say, the show took it’s own direction, and is loosely based off the books. So don’t think they’re very similar, they’re not.
So, this is high fantasy, which means the book is enormous. 800+ pages, 820 to be exact. It’s very detail oriented, which is all means that can go on for many paragraphs, even pages. It is what it is. Get used to that.
The story is so long, I’m not going to summarize anything or really talk much about the story itself except for the necessary things that need to be heard.
Like this: the world building is amazing! And detailed, like I said. Terry Goodkind wrote very intricately when it came to describing rocks, trees, characters, their clothing. It can get boring pretty fast, but don’t let that dock you a reason NOT to pick it up. The writing is so good, it makes you want to keep reading.

I came for the dumpster fire, and enjoyed it. But I wouldn't recommend this book to others. There are so many better fantasy books about huge quests available out there. Find one of them instead.

Wizard's First Rule is the first book in the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. The Sword of Truth series is an awesome fantasy series, but this book is probably my favorite of all of them. I don't know how many times I've read this one. If you are a fantasy fan and haven't read this series, you are missing out. I highly recommend this book and this series.
This is the book that started it all, and it really has everything that a fantasy reader would want: interesting settings, magic, romance, quests, a really evil bad guy, twists and turns, and so much more! The book is fast-paced and doesn't feel like a large fantasy book. Yes, the reader gets the standard good versus evil plot, but for some reason, this book doesn't feel as stale as other fantasy books I've read.
In this book, we are introduced to Richard Cypher, a hunky woodsman with a strong moral compass. We also are introduced to Kahlan Amnell, a beautiful woman with some pretty big secrets. Together, along with an eccentric Obi-Wan like wizard, they travel across a thrilling landscape, meeting interesting groups and running into magical things. Darken Rahl makes an interesting evil bad guy. You really root against him and cheer on Richard and Kahlan.
I really like this series because it doesn't feel long and drawn out like some other sets of fantasy series that I can think of. Goodkind is actually a pretty good writer and the pacing felt pretty good for a book that is pretty long. In a way, it is standard fantasy: magic, wizards, creatures, good versus evil. But the characters seem a little fresher and Goodkind puts a darker twist as a part of his unique style.
I love, love, love, love, love this book. It gets better with each read. :-) I highly recommend it to fantasy fans, but I think even people who aren't into the genre may be able to appreciate some of the other aspects of the story: the romance, the adventure, etc. Five stars.

The first 500-ish pages were great. A few things I didn’t care for but overall the story and the characters were engrossing. Then the next 200 pages were a quick slope downward. Things happened. Unnecessary things. Things you can’t un-read. As you learn more about Kahlan, and Richard, the logic lost traction. And as unspeakable acts piled on top of crumbling magic systems, I just grew more and more agitated. Sections got skipped and I couldn’t wait to be done.
3 stars because there was a great story here for most of the novel. And Richard With The Temper is a great protagonist.
TW.

There were elements of the story that I really liked, but I just could not get past how the author overemphasized 'evil'. There were a few spots where the author repeated himself to get a point across, and it annoyed me to no end. I read one other book in the series, which I felt was better written, but I doubt I will read any more by this author.
Thought was a little slow to start, but hooked me by the end. Good for the fantasy lovers.
