"To my Princess in the ivory tower.
I’m not very good with words. In fact, most people think I have a third grade vocabulary. But I promise to always find the right words to make you feel safe and loved.
Before you, I was lost. With you, I’m whole.
Now please come down and marry me in front of our family and friends so they know you’re mine.
I love you,
Neil"

Esta es una serie que se pone cada vez más interesante y uno sigue con ganas de saber más sobre los demás personajes.

From the description of this book, and already knowing the characters of Gwynn and Neil, I knew this story would have some action. I wasn’t wrong. So much suspense and intrigue! The author did a wonderful job of keeping me guessing until she was ready for the truth to be known. There were quite a few scenarios that my mind jumped between while reading this book.

There was definite chemistry between Gwynn and Neil in the last book, Married by Monday. I was happy to discover the chemistry continued into this book. There is, for me, wasn’t a burning fire. But it was such a pleasant warm-fuzzy feeling that made me so happy when they finally gave into their feelings.

Along with the whole suspense of the Raven and Neil’s past, there’s a side story with Karen and a famous movie star. I loved meeting Michael and how he clicked with the group instantly. Of course, I know he’s not “the one” for Karen so it will be interesting to see how their story plays out. Not just because I want Karen to get her HEA, but I’d like to see what happens with Michael.

The way this group of friends always rallies around each other is great. Catherine Bybee always does such an amazing job of writing friendships. (See her Most Likely To series, friendship gold!) This group has truly been through some ups and downs and total craziness together. They always seem to come out stronger though.

Awful Main Character

I have to start by saying that I love this author and until this point I haven't read a single thing she's written that I didn't like. This, however, was the exception. I find the main character Gwen to be so obtuse, spoiled, and childish in how she handles things that even when she's in literal danger it's difficult to root for her. Even in a disastrous situation she found time to be petulant about not getting her way. At the very, very end of the book she has a few redeeming moments, but there's not enough character development to make it feel like she's really grown up or changed. Again, Catherine is an amazing author with a talent for bringing her heroines to life - but in this instance the heroine is more than a bit bratty. If you're trying to read the whole series I recommend reading for continuity's sake but if you're just looking for a fun beach read, I'd skip this one.

Wow!!

This book was thrilling and enchanting - all in one.

Neil is such a hottie! Sure, he acts like an a** in the beginning but wow, when he cares, he cares.
The threat of the past is well thought out and I really loved the way the reasons were being revealed at the end.
About Gwen, yeah, I did not really like here in the beginning, because I thought she was this posh British woman but then she got to me and I really appreciate her.

Bybee's writing style totally gets to me! I love the different perspectives (not just Gwen's and Neil's but also of the others')! Please keep doing this!

What I adore about this series is the way all the characters of the previous books appear again and the way they will get their own story in the following ones. Great!!

Must-read!

We have been teased with this pairing and finally, we get their story. With Gwen and Neil's story, we get both romance and suspense. I mean, this was a nail biter. It starts off, like a typical rom-com, but then the plot thickens. Once the nefarious part of the plot was revealed, the pace picked up and I was drawn in by the challenge of solving this mystery. I have had a soft spot for Gwen, and have always wanted to know more about Neil. I must say, I love them together. Neil actually sees Gwen, when everyone else doubts her, and Gwen helps Neil work through his past. She brings out the best side of Neil and there's a lot to love there.

This book was below average, even among the books of the same genre.

Issues I have with this book:

1) Poor editing. There were typos, punctuation errors and word misuse. English is not my first language, not even my second, but even I know that this sentence:

And when he gripped the back of her hair, and pulled her into his embrace, he took control

makes zero sense. You can't grip the BACK of someones' HAIR.

2) Bullshit. Seriously:

Gwen met Neil’s hazel eyes, which changed color with his mood.

The next time I read that someones' eyes change color with their mood I'm gonna set the book on fire.

3) Characters' complete and utter lack of personality. What do we know about Gwen? She's British and blond. Mmmmm... Yeah, that tell us zero about the kind of person she is. She really has no interests in life, no ambitions and no values. All we get is a bunch of excuses for why she doesn't have a personality (being a sheltered lady and all that).

What do we know about Neil? He's ex-military and has PTSD. Ok, the first is something he NO LONGER is, the second is a condition, not a personality trait. I assume after the events in the book he will get better and/or seek help. And after that, what will be left of him? The fact that he is, apparently, hung like a bear?

4) Portrayal of women. All the women in these series don't have a life, they just pass the time until they get married. Jeez, people, we're not in the 1800! All of them quit working the moment they get married, as if working is a necessary chore you are relieved of when a man starts taking care of you. UGH. Get a life, girl...

Also, the portrayal of both men and women is sexist in the extreme.

5) Portrayal of sex. Ok, so Gwen is over 30 years old, but never had enjoyable sex, were in love and/or in a long-term relationship? She's never even seen an attractive man in porn. Mmmm... That's kinda strange. And don't give me that lady bullshit. Being a lady doesn't mean you're never in love or attracted to anyone.

It just the authors way of making her inexperienced at 30. You can't make her beautiful and a virgin at that age, so the author just takes away all the pleasure from her previous dealings with men. So that her love/sex with Neil is special.

Being experienced does not equal being dirty, and being in love several times in a lifetime does not make the love not "true". Love and sex can be special even if you had previously enjoyed that with someone else.

6) The author wasn't even trying. The plot and characters are so simple, predictable and cliche. Can you even consider that a book? It's just a rehash of every other romance book ever. And not even a good one. There's zero originality in any part of the book. The evul villain, the controlling lover. UGH, give me a break...

7) Gwen keeps taking Neil's attempts to protect her as signs of "caring". Can't you remember that he's a professional bodyguard? The man's only doing his job and you keep harassing him! It's not fair to hit on someone you employ. If the genders were reversed, there would be so much outrage about this...

Don't waste your time on this.
