A pity but this book is so poorly written. Information about the world is just dumped on us randomly, there's no character goal or personality to connect to, everything is told not shown, and I just found myself utterly bored. There's potential to have made the worldbuilding gel with the protagonist but it's not done here. When a book is still making me ask 'why should I care' this far in I just can't keep going.

a masterclass in storytelling and societal critique all in one beautiful epic fantasy. the way that cycles of oppression and the lived experiences of those oppressed were portrayed in this book was truly astounding i don’t know if i’ve ever seen this level of detail in political and historical world-building in many other fantasy books! saara el-arifi you absolutely ate that. also bonus point the moral of the story is that there is always an insecure man on the scene of crime, specifically talking about you Jond you will never have a friend in me . this slow burn served so hard that me and my entire bloodline will be fed for the next 10 years. truly a full course meal i love you lesbians
