A rare case of the film being far superior to the book. I love the movies and see how they did a masterful job of rearranging and combining elements of the novel into two separate films. But this isn't a review of the movies. The book is episodic, sometimes riveting, other times convoluted and highly sexist (I know that is part of the culture but still). Great chapters were followed by mediocre ones giving the book a mixed bag feel. Some chapters, particularly the one about Lucy and her "female parts" problem was one of the most ludicrous and cringworthy things I've ever read. There are some startling changes in the book (compared to the film) which are fun. Overall, the book was disappointing, especially after seeing it on many "must read" lists.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would, bit it did drag at some points.
I really enjoyed this book. The basic plotline is much less neurotic and makes a bit more sense.
It has some pretty coarse sections, like the culturally inherent misogynist attitudes, but sadly it is historically appropriate.
Definitely worth a read. There are some really random parts in the movie that are further explained in the book. Such as, why the hell was everyone afraid of Luca Brazi in the movie? He was just a large poorly speaking idiot. In the book...holy hell. Also, Micheal has much more of a transformation and growing obligation to his family.
What I'm saying is, if you liked the movie, you need to give this a read.

In a rare feat, the movie is actually better than the book.
The narrator didn't vibe with me, will try physical book at some point I think
I finished this book much quicker than I've finished my last few books, which speaks to how great it was. I couldn't stop reading it, not only was it really fast-paced and suspenseful, it also was extremely well-written. the complexity of the characters is incredible, their journey to the Mafia and ending up as a part of it, finding themselves becoming part of and loving a world they had previously disdained. It was just incredible.
