This is a rare example of the movie being much better than the book. The characters aren't as interesting here and a lot of time is spent with gross plotlines I didn't care for. I still appreciate what Puzo set up here(for the movie) though, so it's not all bad.
The content that was in the movies was great. You get more details in the book, and that's why I picked it up. Much of what was left out of the movies was schlock; some of it bizarre. Overall though, pretty darn good.
This book definitely goes on my top 3 favorite books of all time list! Not only was the plot beyond captivating, but Puzo's style of writing made each page so easy to turn. I found myself connecting with the characters and really feeling like I was right there with all of the action. Each plot twist caught me by surprise. Beautifully written, beautiful classic!
I really, really enjoyed this. It was quite a bit more sexually explicit than I was expecting! It was brutal, violent and clever!
There were quite a few events I don't remember being in the film but it has been over 10 years since I watched it and I am definitely itching to rewatch it now!
The only reason it's not getting a full five stars for me is just because there were so many side characters with similar names and the timeline went back and forth so much that sometimes I got a little lost. But I think that's more me than the book.
I highly recommend the audiobook! The narration is fantastic and I was amused when I realised the actor is the actor who provides the voice of Fat Tony in The Simpsons! He did a fantastic job and it all felt very authentic!

being a passionate fan of the movie and counting it as my favorite of all time (which everyone jokes is my most masculine trait), i thoroughly enjoyed this read. while the book delved into asides that i thought contrasted unfavorably from the tightly spun narrative of the movie, i did personally love the depth of the inner worlds of all of the characters.
EXCELENTE TRABAJO.
REALMENTE ES UN LIBRO QUE RECOMIENDO A OJOS CERRADOS, SE DEJA LEER EXTREMADAMENTE RAPIDO POR LA FORMA EN LA QUE ESTÁ NARRADO, CON UNOS PERSONAJES MUY BIEN CONSTRUIDOS. ES UNA HISTORIA QUE NO TE DA TREGUA, AUNQUE SE PONGA LENTA A VECES, NO DEMERITA PARA NADA.

I came into this book dreading it* because I have never liked the movies. In fact, I hate them. That said, the book I didn't completely hate, although there were certainly parts, like the Johnny and Lucy storyline(s), that I did not care for at all. (What was the point of any of that?)
*Why read it then, right? Because it's on The BBC's Big Read list which I'm working through. Stubbornly.
Spoiler
Probably has something to do with the fact that my family's response was always, "He deserved it," when I would get upset by the fact that, in one of the movies, the family has their own brother killed. That will make you wonder. It was some relief that this does not occur in the book.*Why read it then, right? Because it's on The BBC's Big Read list which I'm working through. Stubbornly.
A healthy dose of testosterone and American mythology. What could be better?
Siento que me acaban de inyectar una dosis de sangre siciliana
