My bookclub read this to mixed reviews but I found it very entertaining. Maybe that is because I love a young girl narrator. For me, page turning but warning! triggers abound for sensitive readers!
Overall I liked it. You pretty much spend the entire book trying to figure out if you should like this girl or not - and the struggle really comes from her just coming across as a total bitch. It's easy to draw similarities to Gone Girl's Amy Dunne but with Ani is feels empty, hallow. By the end there is some redemption but the reader has to work pretty hard for it.
insufferable mc, I hope she dies (we'll never know)
that one fucking asian line, jesus christ. This book is racist, VERYY fatphobic and has weird gay stereotypes

You know how every thriller after Gone Girl has been branded "the new Gone Girl"? This was one of those books, and let me tell you, Gone Girl this is not... The synopsis is pretty misleading, I picked this hoping to read a good thriller and instead I got a drama that has left me frustrated and outraged. I'm giving it two stars because the writing is decent, but this was so not the story I was expecting...
Abandoned. I worked really hard to avoid all this shit in high school, not interested in an uncritical dive back into it.
So. This is the book that's supposed to be the latest "it" book. Maybe I'm in a weird place but I wanted something light after reading Missoula, and then this book has a gang rape scene. And that's not even the most violent thing that happens in this book.
Fundamentally, I just couldn't connect the main characters with the events that happened to her. There were glimpses of terrific writing in this book and I would read something else by this author, but this book was not for me.

As I read the first several pages, I had to wonder how this book was ever added to my Want to Read list. The narrator is everything I don't like about women: a shallow, materialistic, bitch who harshly critiques other women while all the while comparing herself to them to be sure she's always seen as better than, smarter than and more successful than them.
A third of the way through, I seriously considered how far I'd read before deciding not to finish it.
At the halfway mark, I decided to plow on through. Although it became mildly more interesting, it's never more than just ok. It had the potential to speak volumes about rape, domestic violence, the media, revenge, forgiveness, love and happiness, porn, the death of a child and more... but instead it stops well short of saying anything at all. Ugh.
