I think it was Vonnegut who said "No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the reader may see what they are made of."
Sour Candy certainly does that. Within 30 pages, our main character, Phil Pendleton's life is turned upside down, and things get even worse for him as the book goes on.
There's some impressively gruesome imagery in this book, much of which has to do with that title (which becomes more ominous the further you read). I breezed through this in about 90 minutes. I couldn't put it down.
Highly recommended to folks who want a quick, sharp horror story that will stick in their minds long after they put it back on the shelf.

Ya know, this was shaping up to be a three star horror novella, nothing too bad, but also nothing too exciting... but then it took a weird abstract turn (you'll know when you read it...) and then the ending was wholly unsatisfying as well, so... 2 stars, unfortunately.
I know some people like such endings, where you're left wondering, have questions, but I just personally don't. If you're gonna give me specific explanations for some of the things, then I want explanations for all of them. If I have too many logic questions at the end, you didn't do your job as an author right, sorry. Rather than feeling the horror of it all, I was just left confused.

Sour Candy is a very quick but very fun read. It really taps in well to elements of cosmic horror that's quite well done for the story's length. It was really shocking and scary to read about how humans are basically birthing vessels for these otherworldly, nordic-esque gods. And it's really inventive the way people are drawn in by eating the offered sour candy acting akin to a sort of Eucharistic body of Christ or Indiana Jones Blood of Kali type of thing where you're drawn in under a a terrible dark spell and by the time you realize it it's too late.
It was gifted to me by my girlfriend on Valentine's Day, who I know is reading this review right this very moment, and it was a really entertaining, swift book that's a perfect read for a holiday of sweetness and candy. Not to mention you can easily finish it in one sitting. So thank you Bri for the wonderful gift on Valentine's Day about how we're all just being harvested by extra-dimensional gods ❤️

Not necessarily scary, but children DO make me extremely uncomfortable, so...

I really don’t know what I think about this, novella? Short story? It only took about an hour or so to read. It felt like a short story with a lot packed in & still was too short for a really meaty plot. I know I’m not making sense.
Ok. After a car accident, a man finds his whole reality has shifted. He suddenly has no girlfriend, no job & a son that he swears isn’t his. A son that dresses in old fashioned clothes & speaks like a child, but has knowledge that surpasses most men. This book has cringe, a lot of cringe. I usually don’t like that, but it didn’t feel overdone. I think the best part about the story is the dread you experience every time our main character escapes his home. The drawback of the book is little to no background on the child. I know it’s probably to use our imaginations, but, I mean, maybe just a little hint?
