sword catcher reads just like every other cassandra clare book, except with more brothels and less lovable characters. our mcs are half-baked, boring and have absolutely no chemistry. the worldbuilding is lazy (geumjoseon, really?) and the politics are murky.
but at least i don't think she's plagiarizing a darker shade of magic lol.

Turns out Cassandra Clare can write something that isn't shadowhunters
AND she can do it really well
... if you ignore that it has very similar character dynamics to A Darker Shade of Magic - there is literally an adopted royal bound to serve a prince AND he's called Kell. Who thought this was a good idea?
Also are we meant to like Connor in any way? He's just a bit of a shit. Too cruel to be a valid love interest to Lin.
In fact, there was too much sexism and misogyny in the world. I don't love reading about women who struggle. Especially when it seems like there is no way out. And especially when the male characters don't seem to question it. At all.
Antonnette is a legend. Using the system to her advantage. Queen.
There's also loads of political intrigue happening. LOADS. I like the criminal stuff but adding external struggles to the internal stuff was too much.
