I struggled with Tolkien's often verbose way of writing more than usual with this book, and also felt the format wasn't ideal - retelling the same story several times with slightly different edits. Still gave it a decent rating as I do love his work, and wish my brain had had a bit more bandwidth when I was reading this to be able to digest it properly.

Christopher Tolkien does a wonderful job editing and explaining differences between versions of this story. JRR was clearly brilliant, but that brilliance would be lost to time without his son's dedication and honor of his father's legacy.

Like Beren and Lúthien, The Fall of Gondolin not only contains prose of story telling, but also has commentary by Christopher Tolkien explaining changes and timelines on his father's work. The story goes beyond simply telling how Gondolin fell, and includes how Tuor came to Gondolin and what happened to the survivors afterward.

This book simultaneously answered many questions about this pre-Lord of the Rings era, and left me with many more questions. It grieves me that JRR Tolkien was unable to finish any of his works that predate Lord of the Rings, as Middle-earth had so much to give.

This was good, and had some really good background and history, but was very dry. I knew it would be before I started reading, and I am glad I did read it.

This book will be liked by Tolkien completists and fans of the research and writing process.

Basically it is the story retold, with the Author's son breaking in and explaining how the story was compiled from notes, found pages, interviews, and father/son discussions. It is interesting because the stories are good, but also because of how "real" the people/places/events of middle earth are to the Tolkiens.

i had very high expectations coming in to this book- the version of tfog in unfinished tales is beautiful and i had so much fun reading it, and ulmo is my favorite vala. on the level of actual story and reading, it did disappoint. it wasn't much fun and it wasn't as nice as the other version. there were still very nice parts and new information that im glad to have, and i liked parts of the commentary. wish tolkien had finished it.
