13 Treasures

Pretty good self resource for faerie lore. Quite nice change of pace for a YA book with cool and nifty tricks.

Tanya is a young girl with a secret that she tries to hide but wants to tell. She can see fairies, and not just any fairies but cruel ones who punish her when they discover that she's been writing about them in a diary. Their punishments can be violent and destructive, and their last attack leaves Tanya in a lot of trouble with her mother. Once her mother finally feels she's become too much to handle, especially since she has no idea what's really going on with her daughter, Tanya is sent to live with her grandmother at Elvesden Manor.

Any relief Tanya might have hoped to have at her grandmother's is shattered by the presence of fairies all over the place. As Tanya interacts with the magical creatures around and within the manor, she becomes embroiled in a mystery she feels compelled to solve.

For a debut, The Thirteen Treasures isn't half bad. I thought the writing style was crisp and flowed well. Likewise, characters are well-developed and three-dimensional. I especially liked Tanya's cousin, Fabian.

This is a really imaginative story. I would say that the plot, once considered away from the writing, leaves a little wanting - or maybe I should say plots, as there is the one main plot and a few side plots. I wasn't too crazy about the situation with Red and her appearances in the story, but this dislike was overshadowed by other elements of the story that I enjoyed, mainly the author's writing.

Michelle Harrison is definitely an author to watch, and I hope to continue this series.

I enjoyed this story a lot. Tanya reminded me of myself being younger and adventurous. A magical backyard with fairies and other creatures would have been fun to walk into. My daughter made a great choice for me to read for summer vibes.

2.5 or 3 out of 5 stars

This first book was a lot of back story, which makes sense since it's the first book in the series. However, I think there's only three books in the series and nothing big really happens till the last quarter or so of the book. Maybe it's because I was listening on audio, but it was hard for me to stay engaged. I really wanted something more to happen with the 13 treasures. Either nothing really happened or I wondered off in my brain(whatever the phrase is). I also wanted us to have more interactions with the fairies.
Besides my complaints,if you like slightly creepy, mysterious, evil fairies, heartbroken unhinged adults, then you'll like this book. It kind of gave me A Series of Unfortunate Events vibes.

Mukava lukukokemus, mutta ei mitenkään vavahduttava tai mieleenpainuva.

Reminds me of the Spiderwick Chronicles and the Fablehaven series. I liked the story, and thought Tanya was a cute and brave character, but the story seems like a well-written rehash of these other books.

This was . . . fine.
