Black Science combines themes that we've seen in many other sci-fi/speculative fiction works before: the slippery slope of science, "Sliders"-esque traveling through multiple dimensions, and a ragtag group who doesn't always get along coping with extreme stress. However, it's done well, and Remender's script reads well to develop the characters and have the reader care about them (at their own risk, since he doesn't seem to be squeamish about killing them off). Including one of the scientist's two children also changes the dynamic of the story in an intriguing way. I'll definitely be reading more.

A madcap, rapid fire blast of sci-fi. While I love the pace of the chaos, I wish some of the character development and emotional punches were a little more slowly rolled out. As is, some of the things that ought to be major emotional hits come across as unearned. I’m excited to continue with the series, and I’ve seen them all lined up at a used book store.
The art is a lush, modern, European sci-fi affair, with allusions to hedonistic sword & sorcery classics.

I had high hopes for this series, but it is not living up to them unfortunately. As it’s the first volume, I’m prepared to see how volume two goes, but the characters are all pretty horrible, and it’s like a bad version of quantum leap (which was one of my favourite series growing up).

It's very pretty, but isn't this just, uh, grimdark Sliders?

I really wasn´t impressed by this graphic novel. I would not say that the art was bad, they a few things, especially the inter-spaced creatures which looked very funny and interesting. However, the way how the human were drawn was not really why cup of tea and I also could not really connect with the story. Maybe it was just to weird for me, I am not necessarily quenched by weird stuff in graphic novels but in this one I was often wondering what´s even happening. Unfortunately I was to confused by this first volume to rate it anything higher than 2 stars. I will probably not pick up the next volume because there just too many Image Comic series like Saga, Descender or Lazarus which appeal more to me.

This was MUCH better than I anticipated. The characters were really interesting, the story was constantly surprising, and the art had a super cool sci-fi grunge look to it that fit everything really well. Look forward to the next one
