Graphic Novel Book Club January 2016

This was one of the books I was given in the GN Christmas BookSwap and everyone was so interested in it at that meeting (as none of us had heard of it, but the back writing sounded so compelling) that we assigned it as part of the next meetings books.

I have to admit I wasn't expecting to get out from this series what it gave me. I love the number of layers in it and that the hero is definitely, insanely, massively an anti-hero who is not looking to turn it around and become a hero by any scope of the imagination. I love that you are aware from issue 1-2 that no one you love and learn about is safe from dying suddenly, which makes each word and scene with them more precious, more important, more focusable on.

I was not by even infinitesimal stretch of the imagination expecting what happened at the end of this volume and I can't wait to see what that means for volume 2.

I loved the story. The characters were pretty good. I didn’t like the art at all, though.

"It wasn't until I'd met everyone else's measure of success that I realized I failed myself."
^This is the first line in this book. One sentence that can sucker punch you in the gut and make you so intrigued to find out the truth behind it.

Black Science starts off a little weird. The reader follows Grant McKay running for his life with little information on why he is running. It turns out he is part of a research team that has found a way to travel to alternate dimensions in order to obtain vital resources that are limited in our universe. The device used to travel between dimensions activated unexpectedly and the team has to be within its range when it jumps again or be lost.

There is animosity among some of the team members, which creates tension and makes things more interesting. The personality of some of the characters is flat though. It's not that they lack personality, but they are predictable at times. They are still engaging though, which is a triumph for the creators.

I like the art. It is playful at times because the creators are able to explore worlds that are different from and reminiscent of Earth. I am often amazed at the strange creatures that other people can think up. The illustrations can be jumbled at times though. Overall, they hit the mark and pulled me in.

The story and art are similar to another Rick Remender work, Low. I highly recommend this book if you enjoyed his other work. Despite a confusing opening, this is a very well done book.

This is everything I have ever wanted, and then some.

Special mention goes to the art, which is so incredibly good, vivid, thick, that I often couldn't bring myself to turn the page for minutes, just to try and soak up all the details.

The opening section and monologue were far too clichéd and tedious and dull.
Quit.

Feels a little heavy on the drama, not quite balanced with the action I feel should be in something like this (or also insert science for action, both are acceptable to balance out drama). The art is fabulous. I want a little more exploration of the other dimensions, which will hopefully come in later volumes.

That's some heavy sci-fi pulp writing.
