This one took a lot longer for me to get into and I never felt as connected to the story and characters as I have with other books by Ilona Andrews.

This is a standalone SQL. Despite The author under writing williams role, I could tell that he would make a great MC. He’s a very appealing, lonely, curious person who grows and changes throughout the story. The heroine is equally appealing and IA does a great job of keeping the tension going without creating stupid hindrances.

Ole Ilona Andrews knows how to write a battle scene, fantastic as usual.

My problem is that I love Rose from the first book [b:On the Edge|6329547|On the Edge (The Edge, #1)|Ilona Andrews|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1307445575l/6329547._SY75_.jpg|6515186] so much that nobody can fully replace her... I also had a small issue with William that is completely unrelated to his personality. In the first book for a very long time we can't be sure which side is he on and... when his colours finally show I just... I didn't have enough time to find my way to him. (You know, it's a similar situation as with Bran in [b:Magic Burns|1811543|Magic Burns (Kate Daniels, #2)|Ilona Andrews|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1311280284l/1811543._SY75_.jpg|1810889].) So... I was worried. For a no real reason... it shows... again... I really should trust Ilona Andrews more...
The judge's massive eyebrows crept up. "Kaldar. Are you the one speaking for the plaintiff today?"
"Yes, Your Honor."
"Well, shit," Dobe said. "I guess you're familiar with the law. You hit it over the head, set its house on fire, and got its sister pregnant.”

But again, it was more complicated, because this is a spy book... and I don't really care much about spy plots... it's still a romance, but not as obvious one as the first one (or maybe it is... but while the first book was a historical romance with a fantasy setting this added the espionage into the mix, which... I actually still am not a huge fan of, but it worked in the story and it's definitely just a personal preference.
She put her hand on her hip. "Where are you going?"
"To the boat. You called me Lord Bill again. That means we're cool."
Cerise slapped her forehead with the heel of her hand and followed him.

But let's get back to William, because I absolutely didn't expected to appreciate his character this much - like... I have to admit that the fear of rejection get a bit too much in the end (from both sides), but overall I just love how it was psychologically handled and... simply, Ilona Andrews' characters are the best! To sum it up... this shouldn't be my thing, but I inhaled it in 24 hours (I'm home sick... that helped with it...), I definitely liked the first one better, but the family dynamics in this one were awesome and overall I just want this series on my bookshelves now... which might be a problem, considering there are no vacant spots there...
“Slowly the reality of the situation sank in. He got his ass kicked, learned nothing, and got saved by a dumb dog and an old lady. If he lived long enough to report to Nancy back in Adrianglia, he would have to gloss over this part.”

Edit 11/4/22 Reading this for a second time really improved my opinion - some of the issues dissolved naturally. I came to adore William's character, I deeply relate to his not getting societal cues (is it just me or does he read a bit like a character on the spectrum... plus the violence...). I'm not in a great space mentally so, I related twice as much. Reading it for second time, I also realised that I adore the fist half and then the second half drops some of the things I enjoy the most and focuses more on the plot which is just fine... I also read Inkeepers between those two reads so those are another layers that made me to enjoy Gaston, Lark, Jack and George so much more... Love it.

Series: The Edge #2
Rating: 5 stars - I loved it!

William has been living in the Edge for the past two years but politics from the Weird has forced him back into service. He heads to the Mire, the Edge’s swamplands, to track down an old enemy and finds himself helping Cerise Mar and her family.

Well I absolutely loved this one! William has had a very rough life because he is a changeling, which are shunned and feared in the Weird. He wants a family but doesn’t think he deserves one because he views himself as a monster. I have loved William since he was introduced and love that he finally found himself a family. I always love when the monster can find love.

Cerise was a wonderful and dangerous heroine. I loved her ability with a sword and how she never hesitated to kill if she had too. I loved her dedication to her family and how she wasn’t afraid of William after she learned what he was. Cerise and William had a wonderful forced proximity relationship that was filled with a lot of intense steamy looks and a lot of danger.

Overall, this was another amazing book for this series. I really loved William and Cerise and hope we see more of them in the future. Also, I love that we see some resolution with the tension in William and Declan’s friendship at the end of this book.

I liked this one significantly more than the first one, in part because I found the main characters a bit more believable and the romance was better done. The action was also better paced and more interesting, there were several very exciting scenes well spaced throughout the book.
