3.12 AVERAGE

I didn't want to continue this book because it is very clear that MC is still in love with the guy, two weeks later... I don't like that

At no point did I know how this was going to end.
emotional slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

The story didn’t have a great hook, and the writing, while good, didn’t captivate my attention.

Actual 3.5

Started out unhinged and I was here for it. As it went on the "love story" was too forced. I didn't see any chemistry

I gave this book three stars because although it was enjoyable, Layla did annoy me quite a bit. She was a little immature, as was Ian. I did really enjoy the twist of the story and even though I saw the very end outcome coming, it didn’t take away from the story. The author also has a very interesting type of writing and it was an enjoyable and quick read.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review and I thank Annette Christie and the publishers for choosing me.

Heavy miscommunication tropes and awkward love triangle with brothers. Not sure how this can ever work out. Too much suspension of disbelief and she leaves her cat alone wayyyy too much.

Ok, I love reading romances and of course they all have some unrealistic things in them (like a guy being incredibly romantic and sweet) but this one felt a bit more unrealistic than the other ones. Layla’s boyfriend Ian breaks up with her and weeks later he gets into an accident and forgets breaking up with her so when the hospital calls her she plays along. His brother, who Ian has a rocky relationship with, moves in with Ian a few weeks after the incident and reveals to Layla that he knows that Ian dumped her. Matt (Ian’s brother) a former tv writer ends up helping out Layla at her job by agreeing to be the playwright for her theatres production.
Overall it was supposed to be an easy read but frankly it took me quite a bit to actually get through it. Layla frustrated me many times throughout the book, enough to get me to stop reading quite a few times.

“When insomnia is your only friend and, frankly, he’s a bit of dick”
“Because when someone broke up with you, their family usually broke up with you too.”
“Whatever he wanted from her, he could have it.”
“We’re doing this for love, how wrong could it be?”
“Sometimes our mistakes are what lead us to the right path.”

The main character is beyond and insufferable and I’m genuinely not a fan of the switching brothers romance trope. Respectfully, can we just keep it out of the family? However, I am still giving this three stars because I couldn’t put it down

Big thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for gifting me an Advanced Reader Copy of Annette Christie's For Twice in My Life to read and review!

I found the concept of this one quite entertaining - Layla is dumped by her longtime boyfriend Ian, seemingly out of the blue. And then two weeks late,r as she is still grieving the loss of the relationship, she gets a call that he is in the hospital. Ian was hit by a car while biking and has a concussion - he's okay but doesn't remember that they broke up. Layla goes with it, and they seemingly pick up as if the breakup never happened.

It seems to be going well until Ian's brother Matt, who Layla has never met, comes to town. He's everything that Ian is not - and everything that Layla has been attracted to in the past.

There was a lot here that I liked - and it was clear from the jump the chemistry that Matt and Layla had. But at times I felt like the book was trying to do a bit too much - offering glimpses of her past, potential conflict with her mother, etc. And the lie that was really the bass for the relationship felt forgotten until almost the end, and then everything happened very quickly and didn't feel totally earned.

I did enjoy this book - it was super solid. I just enjoyed the characters and wanted a bit more for them at the end.
