Tonia gave this book to Zac for Christmas 2022 and Jordan and I read it to him out loud at bedtime. But this system means that I missed half the book, so I decided to read it myself. It’s fun mystery about burrowing owl, bullies, and runaways in Florida.

Although it is not evident by my shelves here, I have read Carl Hiaasen before. I was looking for an funny audiobook and decided to try one of Hiaasen's kids' titles. I thought he might do a good job writing for children and I was correct. As at least one professional review said, Hiaasen's humor has a decidedly juvenile bend to it.

Roy Eberhardt, his family, friends, a building site and a bunch of owls made for an entertaining listen. Hiaasen takes typical kid and adult behaviors and has a lot of fun telling his tale. The reader, Chad Lowe, does a good job with the story. There is nothing new in this tale, but at the end this listener was very satisfied with how it all works out.

I think this book would make a great audiobook for a family car trip, maybe even to Florida. I would think that reluctant readers, especially boys, would find this interesting enough to stick with it.

The following review is by my son and padawan Liam:

I give HOOT 4 and a half stars. I liked how there was a mysterious running boy called "Mullet Fingers." I liked how Mullet Fingers and Beatrice are related. I like how Roy tricked Dana into thinking there were cigarettes in a trailer and that he stepped in the mouse traps.

I disliked that the ending kind of left you hanging. I also didn't like that the story is called "Hoot" and you don't figure out the title until the very end.

I would definitely recommend this book to other kids.

I watched the film a few years back and when I saw the book in a charity shop decided to pick it up and see if it was any good. Also owls. I'm a little obsessed with owls... I liked it but I wish there could have been more focus on the boys' relationship. The film went deep and implied that there was something more between them and I wish we could have had more of that in the book. Also bullies need to learn that they never win.
ETA: Also what kind of name is Dana for a boy?? Is that a primarily American thing?

I read this a long time ago, and tween me would probably have bumped the rating up a star. Reading it now, I still really enjoyed the humour. There's a lot of the funny one-liner variety, and some nice comebacks. Beatrice biting the toe-ring off her stepmother's foot (while she was awake!) was an image that managed to stay with me all these years, even if the name did not, which says something.
The message is a classic, and never a bad thing for someone to hear.
All in all, a fun one time read, but probably pitched a bit more for someone 9-14ish.
