i have SO many thoughts
the one thing i can't say, though, is that this book wasn't entertaining
full review to come once i figure out who i am, having read this at age 26 when i've only ever seen the - admittedly still scarring - Disney movie

I read this for Italian class; super redundant, goes on for way too long.

KC Green's artwork has always left such a huge impression on me and pushed me to get more abstract and emotive artistically. Here he gets to let loose and play with a story he clearly loves and spin around in ways that so funny and cute. Pinocchio being a bad boy is less annoying here, as I know people can feel about other versions of this story, and more like a charming looney tunes gag rapscallion boy when you know he just cant help falling for the next little scam or trap. And when the story turns and Pinocchio commits to being a good little boy, Im proud of the little fella! He deserves that nice little outfit! Good job Pinocchio!!

Certainly not my favorite classic. It is unevenly episodic, with several points of cliff-hanger common to a story that was originally serialized, but the spread of each episode was inconsistent, and the overall plot and character development stopped, started, changed direction, redid itself. 3 stars because I can see enjoying this bit by bit and looking forward to the next installment. But it's close to 2 stars: the didacticism is heavy-handed, and the consequences are all fantastical. The consequences make for the great part of the story, but they do not give value to the didactic nature, as they are not consequences a child would actually face. As an adult, I can see the metaphorical connections, but I don't think they come through for children.

Read this to my two younger kids...not sure if it was this translation or not but it was quite an interesting read. Lots to the story that I never knew...I didn't know about the blue haired fairy popping up all over the place or what exactly was up with the donkeys. Pinocchio is a twit with a slow learning curve...my kids thought that the Land of the Blockheads and Island of the Boobies were a riot. They were also amused when the stick of wood which is not yet exactly Pinocchio calls Gepetto names and starts fights between Gepetto and Master Cherry. My kids are 7 and 10 and this was the most excited they have been about a nightly read aloud book in quitea long time so that was fun. I am glad to know so many more of the details of this story. Very much about stresses quiet obediance in much of the book which is not really my kids or my thing but in the end when the puppet just turns kind and caring that is enough.
