Four stars: Not my fav of the collection. First half of book kept my attention, last half was meh until the last few chapters - per usual Nicholas Sparks had me in tears in the end. Very relatable storyline though. Interesting he writes all of his books inspired by a family member’s life, moment or story in their life. This one was about his actual son and that got me.

Even for a Nicholas Sparks book, this had a little tooo much man pain that can only be cured by the endless devotion of a good woman for my liking. I’m also getting tired of the repeated notion of one’s life being incomplete because they are unwed. I also predicted Mitch dying within a page of meeting him and was bitter about it the whole time because he 👏🏽 did 👏🏽 not 👏🏽 de👏🏽serve 👏🏽 it and it was only used to add to Taylor’s man pain. 🙄🙄🙄
During a storm, Denise and her son Kyle get into a serious car crash. Taylor McAden, a volunteer firefighter in the town, helps rescue Denise and find her missing son who has learning disabilities. As their relationship grows, Denise has to confront the fears of sharing the journey of raising Kyle while Taylor has to confront the fears of his past.
This was so average. I really think Kyle, Denise, and Taylor are special but never felt completely invested in any part of the story. The plot seemed very routine and I wished for some more action. I did like Spark's foray into some slight mystery. Would have loved if the mystery of Kyle lasted a little bit longer actually! Cute story, loved the real romance (almost too real that it was boring haha), but needed a bit more. At least both main characters have personal growth before they grow together. Higher expectations for Nicholas Sparks oopsies.

Got this audiobook free from the library on the Libby One Drive. I have to say I was hooked and couldn't stop listening. I’m a huge fan of this authors films, but don’t ready any of his books due to sad endings. From the moment I heard little Kyle say “hello Taylor” omg that moment just melted my heart, what a cute adorable child. Wonderful story, so glad I got a chance to listen.
By most people’s standards, Taylor McAden is an amazing man. He always gives it his all on his volunteer firefighting/lifesaving job, often risking his life in the process. He always helps out with his best friend Mitch, his wife Melissa, and their four sons.
Denise Holton certainly thinks he is great. After all, Taylor was the one who rescued her from a car accident one stormy night, then found her son Kyle, who had wandered off into the swamp afterward. But it is more than that. It’s the way Taylor treats Kyle just like a normal boy in the days that follow the accident. Kyle, whose learning disability causes him to speak far below the normal level for kids his age, whose disability was the reason Denise gave up her teaching job and devoted herself full-time to helping Kyle learn. And it’s also the way Taylor McAden looks at her like no one has looked at her before.
But after a few blissful months, things seem to go sour. Taylor has childhood demons that haunt him and prevent him from making a real commitment to relationships. And it is only through more tragedy that Taylor can learn to let go of his guilt and take the next step forward with Denise and Kyle.
THE RESCUE is beautiful and made me cry numerous times, every time I read it. If you’re looking for a book that will stir your emotions and cause you to appreciate romance more, this is it.
