The author writes in a perfect narrative voice for a teenage boy; every line was believable and perfect. What let this book down, however, was the storyline. It descends into a surreal kind of criminal pursuit plot, which seems jarring compared to where the earlier chapters would have you believe it would lead.

This was a quick tense read that seemed a little rushed at the end. I recommend it to those who enjoy coming-of-age tales and I give it a solid 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

No. Just Nope.

This had potential to be really great but I just couldn’t connect with any of the characters, and the story felt like it was just thrown together.

I was so disappointed with this.

"Jim was chanting something that sounded druidic, but I don't think druids ever gathered around Easter Island chanting shitshitshitshitshit."

TW - Animal gets hurt, teens get hurt, use of the N word.

Well, that escalated quickly...
This one had me hooked very early on, and I just could not stop reading. It was atmospheric and, at times, a little terrifying. I know that at thirteen, I certainly wouldn't have wanted to deal with what Joey and his friends had to deal with. There were moments of humour, and I absolutely loved Joeys dog, Bandit.
A brilliant page-turner that reminded me a little of Stranger Things and Stephen Kings It. A must read.

I am not completely sure about this book. It was totally unbelievable for kids of that age to behave in the ways these kids did. It was a great story but I felt like the kids should have been older.

The called themselves The Outsiders Club.. a group of kids who really didn't fit in in the small town of Payne Arizona. There is Joey, Bobby Jimmy and Tara... who are 13-16. The find an abandoned car in the woods one day... and the The Collector arrives to claim back the contents of that car. A series of crazy scenes and encounters between the characters then start.

It was a good story, I just struggled to see young kids acting the way that they did. Thanks to Killer Reads and NetGalley for a copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest opinions

DNF after 22 pages. Overuse of the word retarded as a slur, outdated gender stereotypes and fat shaming.

Very slow going. I DNF’d around 70 pages in and absolutely nothing had happened yet, unless you count the rampant racism, sexism, and just overall dickishness of the main character. I don’t need to like the main character to enjoy a book but this felt malicious, not just “in character” for a 13 year old boy. In those first 70 pages the word ‘retard’ is used as an insult 6(!) times. Also, his friend (who is overweight) is constantly described as ‘doughy’. Like, I get it, he’s a fat kid, you introduced him as that, I don’t need constant reminders. And when this jerk meets some nice black people? Oh, boy. I literally had to put the book down and breathe slowly for a few minutes.
