As much as I loved this so much of this just felt like a rewrite of blood and ash. I wish less of it had been the same. Also it definitely could’ve used another edit. Some parts were confusing and felt like first draft mistakes. There were even some random quotations out of place.

Also gosh dammit I wish this girl would’ve told Ash to eff right off toward the end. I was annoyed by his continued sexual advances and then the “this means nothing” bull shit. It felt kinda gross.

I will definitely read the rest of the series…but this one seemed to DRAG! I’ve already read the Blood & Ash series, so maybe I was already used to the action. This first book in the series had to set up a lot, and I didn’t have the patience for it.

All I have to say is wow. I was drawn because of how badass Sera, then it was the banter between Sera and Ash. Now, I need to find out what will happen in this world they live in. This is exactly what I love about these romances, yes, there are smutty parts but the worldbuilding is absolutely on point. Armentrout did a phenomenal job of painting a vivid picture of this world. Not to mention, the action sequences are superb. Will definitely be looking for the next book!

-edit- After first (of many lol) reread

Finished my first reread. Will I end up rereading this again in the future? Absolutely. So many good parts in the book.

After reading Poppy's story and From Blood and Ash, Shadow in the Ember now gives a better explanation as to what is happening in the her world thousands of years in the future. You understand the context a little better to.

Nyktas/Ash + Sera will continue to be my favorite couple (along with Rhys + Feyra lol)

Was this From Blood and Ash with dragons? YES. Did I think it was perfect? YES.

I think this book caught more shade than it probably needed to. I do understand the complaints, but I do think that those are issues that were found in all 3 books in the From Blood and Ash series and just like with those, I enjoyed this book so much that I DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANY OF THAT.

I loved Nyktos and Sera more than even Casteel and Poppy and I actually enjoyed the similarities between the two.

As for the story line, I enjoyed the whole book. I went into this hoping to get more details for A War of Two Queens, but by 100 pages I was so attached to these characters that I didn't care if I got that or not. It was an added bonus to me when we actually did get the FBAA tie ins at the end of the book, which made me enjoy this even more.

And uhhhh.... Daddy Nyktos.

Update after reading for the 2nd time:

I picked this book up the first time a few weeks after it was released. This go around, I reread FBAA 1-3 and read ASITE right after in preparation of TWOTQ, and I liked it even more. It felt like the perfect continuation of a story line I already loved.

The first time I read this I gave it 4⭐️, but I enjoyed it so much more the second time.

I don't know how I feel about this book. It's like JLA's stories follow some sort of pattern. This is not to say that the story is bad. I just found it as repetitive after reading a couple of JLA books.

If you loved her other books, you'll likely love this one too.

3 Stars.
