I listened to this book on audio and think I would have enjoyed it so much more if I would have read it myself. This book is told from James perspective where the first one was told by Aimee, and I must admit, I didn’t care for the narrator on this one. I understand why they picked him because it goes back and forth between Carlos and James POV and Carlos has a Spanish accent, but...meh. I liked the story ok. On story alone I would rate it 3.5-4 stars. I was curious when the first book ended how the 2nd would play out and it was entertaining to see how the story unfolded. The story had good pacing which kept me interested. I’m happy to see the 3rd book in the series has Amy Landon (who narrated the first) and a new male narrator so I will definitely be giving the 3rd a listen.

Such an interesting story that had me hooked from the last line of the preceding book! Everything We Left Behind is the second book in a series, but I would definitely recommend reading the first book, Everything We Keep first. I suppose you could just start with book two because the author does give back story to explain what is going on, but I feel you would miss too much. The first book is really good, so reading both books is a great way to prolong the enjoyment of being immersed in the story! I liked getting perspectives of before and after the fugue in alternating chapters, but must admit, my favorite parts to read were the "current" ones. I also appreciated the included epilogue, I'm always curious as to what happens "next".

** Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review. **

I definitely got sucked in as I went. I liked the character dynamics even though it got cheesy at times. But please, please do more copy editing, especially with the Spanish! I couldn't handle "el mundo famoso," "uno momento," or "seviche."

The ending to Everything We Keep left me wanting so much more! There were knots left all tied up and people on the verge of breakthroughs or breakdowns that I never had a chance to see. Everything We Left Behind picks up with James and tells his totally crazy story.

We start with a whammy - his memory comes back. His real memory. That means the person he has been for the past several years is completely erased. The man with a family, children, friends, and a business are wiped away forever as the original person re-emerges. I can't even imagine how confused and disbelieving he must have been. But Kerry Lonsdale took me there! It was amazing - not what happened to him - but how I was brought into that situation and those feelings.

Fast forward a little and we have a family quickly becoming dysfunctional. James' memories pick up with him still together with Aimee, who has moved on and is living a new life. Their conversations and interactions were another brilliant look into the lives of these people. We finally find out exactly what happened with Phil and how James almost died in the first book.

There were a few moments that things got confusing. I wasn't sure which part of the timeline I was in as things jump around quite a bit. Just a tad more streamlining and I think this would have been just about perfect.

*I voluntarily received a review copy of this book*

This was the sequel to Everything We Keep, which I read last year, in which a woman goes searching for her missing husband, James, only to find him living in Mexico in a fugue state with a new family and under an assumed identity as Carlos. After she has moved on, this book picks up years later with the man she left behind in Mexico on the day that he wakes up out of his fugue state as his old self.

Ever since the day that Amy showed up in Mexico looking for James, Carlos has been aware of his condition and the possibility of waking up as James at any given point in time. He begins keeping detailed journals and making plans to ensure the survival of his family once that day comes. But how do you live your life, or face the possibility of falling in love again, when you have no idea if you'll be around tomorrow to remember today?

James, a man who wakes up after years, only to find that his fiance is now married to another man, and that during those lost years he fell in love with someone new, got married, and buried his wife, is now faced with building a relationship with 2 children he has no memory of, from a marriage to a woman he will never have the opportunity to meet.

Narration in this book bounces back and forth between James and Carlos, weaving together the story of these two men: the years and memories that separate them, as well as the families that bind them together.

Pretty repetitive information, it only gets interesting and exciting at the end. Not sure if I’ll read the 3rd book of the series.
