This was a fun book. There were so many experiences and thoughts that she had that I could totally relate to. It always feel great when you can empathize with the narrator and wish you could say to them, "Me too, girl!" I'm glad I decided to listen to this rather than read it. I find I always appreciate comedic memoirs such as this one much better when narrated by the author.
I really enjoyed this book, even if some of the author's experiences were alien to me. I was able to relate to a lot of her high school traumas, and it quickly made me realize that I am glad that part of my life is over! :) She has a great whit, and I hope she writes more books in the future. I look forward to reading more from this talented author.
Love Issa and everything she creates. I loved the way she told her stories in this book.
I love this woman. Bright, funny, real, relatable - she's amazing.
3.5 stars. Not as good as I hoped after just finishing her TV series, Insecure, but still enjoyed it. Listened to audiobook.
I really love Issa Rae's comedy so I was excited to get my hands on this book. I felt like her writing style (and narration) was a little flat. It was a little difficult to really connect with her, it felt like SHE wasn't all that invested in telling her story. I wanted more depth, more emotion, but it felt like a detached retelling of her life. It was entertaining but not what I had hoped for.
First, I “met” Issa through her show Insecure, which is excellent. I love watching it. And one of the things I love is the sound of her voice and how she navigates her worlds with those voices. So while I liked the book, I’m sure I would have liked it better as an audiobook (which I never get). I did really enjoy hearing about her life growing up. I just wish she had come over and told me herself.
I love Issa! I love her voice and it comes through so clearly in this book. She speaks from the heart and feels authentically "her". Very good read
I love Issa. This book was boring though. Sometimes, my interest was piqued, most it wasn’t. I just felt like we kept jumping back and forth between her childhood and her adulthood.
The book ended weird… apart of me wants to give this book 2 stars, but the laughs and being able to relate to Issa, being an awkward black girl myself, kept my interest at certain points.
Otherwise, I wouldn’t read it again. I’ll just stick to my “misadventures of awkward black girl” on YouTube.

I love her and everything she says, but I wish there was more to this book.
