It takes a while to get going, but I was thoroughly invested at the 55% mark.

I don’t know if it’s valid to complain about an epic fantasy book having too many imaginary concepts and terms, but there were ultimately a lot of things like that, so I kind of kept reading until they eventually clicked. If you’re someone that doesn’t like that kind of worldbuilding, it will be a rough time.

The worldbuilding definitely pays off by the end, and I would overall recommend the book. The characters and arcs are lovable and the magic system is bathed in mystery.

elantris review ♡

☆☆☆☆☆ (5)!

I truly didn't expect to love this as much as I did.
This was one of the most unique and well written stories I've ever encountered.
First and foremost, I deeply loved the characters. They were all well developed, had great depth and felt truly real with all their flaws and fears. Still, they were all witty and incredibly clever. I loved trying to keep up with all their shenanigans.
The plot was really interesting and well paced. If I was someone with more time in my hands it would not have taken me this long to finish this book because I just wanted to keep reading at all times.
And the magic system was so very unique and so interesting.
I believe this is connected to the cosmere universe. I'm definitely going to read *all* of Brandon Sanderson's books, I'm only reading in the order that is recommended by a booktoker I follow. She said beginning with mistborn and then reading Elantris was the best order for the easter eggs. And I am SO EXCITED  about the easter eggs. And to explore and discover more of this brilliant universe.
Also, I read mistborn a while ago but I think I might do a reread now because I forgot what happened. :p
Anyways, overall Elantris was a work of art and I think everyone who likes epic fantasy should read it.

Excellent!!! WOW!!I've found one of my favorite authors. I can't wait to read the sequel but I need to wait. I will however devour his other works in the mean time.

The author thinks he's smarter than everyone else, IMHO. I enjoy the world he created, but it's a little over explained and over motivated w/o creating the "I MUST READ" effect that Martin had. If you are interested in this author, read the Mistborn trilogy. It's much better.

Elantris is Sanderson's first novel, and boy does it show. It's not bad, and certainly better than many books I've begun. However, it was fairly lackluster beyond the initial premise of the Elantrians.

If I were not so invested in the Cosmere, I would have stopped about a third of the way in, I think. It just didn't have much to bring to the table to get me interested, unfortunately. The magic system is vaguely presented and honestly pretty uninteresting (especially compared to the excellent alternatives in his later books) and felt almost unnecessary.

If you are truly looking for the entirety of the Cosmere experience, I think it's worthwhile, but just barely. Sanderson has come so far from his Elantrian roots.

What an incredible book! After reading this I can totally understand why Sanderson’s career took off and gained the recognition he deserves with all his talent!
