Want a magic pill that improves your mental and physical health and is free? It's sleep. Go get it. Your brain will thank you.

Aim for 7-8 hours a night. Think you need less? You don't.
Think you aren't royally screwing up the healthy functioning of your body by being sleep deprived? You are.

I highly recommend this book, not because it will be your favourite read but because it has the power to forever change your attitude towards sleep and improve your life.

Don't want to read the whole book? Here's some tips:
1- Stick to a sleep schedule (go to bed & wake up at the same time each day)
2- Avoid exercising 2-3 hours before bedtime
3- Avoid alcohol before bed (obviously nicotine and caffeine also bad)
4- Avoid large meals & beverages before bed
5- Don't nap after 3pm
6- Your bedroom should be dark & cool
7- Wake up with daylight
8- Don't lie in bed awake. If you can't sleep after 20 mins get up and do a relaxing activity.
9- Get LEDs out of the bedroom. The blue light they emit can mess with your circadian rhythm.
10- Staring at your phone/iPad before bed can delay the rise in melatonin in your body by up to 3 hours (they're packed with blue light LEDS) -so skip the screens before bed!

Interesting, informative, and illuminating. Occasionally it was a little slow or drawn out, but it was more often funny, insightful, and extremely helpful in revealing the physiology of sleep, how it impacts our lives, and how we can improve it to improve ourselves.

We all know that sleeping at least eight hours a night is important - in that sense, Why We Sleep offers nothing new. Over the course of 300+ pages, Walker repeatedly extols the life-sustaining values of sleep. What makes this book such a valuable read, however, is the thorough and multifaceted approach that Walker takes in explaining why (as indicated by the title) sleep is so critical. I won't go into that here because I think you need to read the book to fully appreciate the amount of research Walker has dedicated to this field, as well as how much more important sleep is than suggested by most of our mental models. Walker has somehow struck a balance between saying one thing (that sleep is critical) while discussing a range that touches seemingly every facet of daily life. My main quibble with this book is that it doesn't spend much time on sleep for adolescents (he mentioned that children need to sleep more than adults, but exact figures aren't mentioned), though I suppose children aren't the main audience of this book. Nonetheless, I believe that Why We Sleep will offer insights to every reader, regardless of their views and habits surrounding sleep.
