This book was slightly boring in places. Despite its unconventionality with the ways in which it told the story, I found parts (such as the boxing match) very slow.

However, I really enjoyed the PLOT TWIST! The fact that Elwood died and Turner was living his future (in a way) really got this book from a 3 to a 4 star.

With its historical routes, and that ending, this book did get better, then got worse, then got amazing!

I was about 10 pages into this book when I went from feeling a child's excitement to experiencing his deep disappointment because of other people's cruelty. And that was basically what happened multiple times throughout the course of this book.

Elwood is a Black teen in the Jim Crow South, unjustly sent to the Nickel reform school, where unconscionable abuse is unleashed. He still has an optimistic outlook, encouraged in part by Martin Luther King's speeches and the civil rights movement. Unlike some of the other students, he also has his grandmother on his side. His friendship with another boy, Turner, is another source of strength and insight.

I recently read Colson Whitehead's "Underground Railroad" and was impressed with his writing. The Nickel Boys was exceptional in every way. The ending was unexpected but felt right.

My heart fractured over and over. But still I had hope . . .
