Great stuff. A perfect tale to make the friendship between these two beloved characters feel earned. I found it had a slightly western feel. Looking forward to the sequel!
I'm normally not a fan of prequels, especially after going through the main course first, but The Crown Tower is one of those rare exceptions. While newcomers can certainly start here, they may leave wanting a bit more, but fans of the Riyria Revelations will appreciate what's on offer here.
There's something so fun about seeing the details of a story so often teased in the main series fleshed out fully. If you really wanted to know the story of how protagonists Royce and Hadrian met, and their mission to infiltrate the impregnable Crown Tower, this is where you're going to look.
Side note: I'll praise Michael's clean easy-to-read writing style once again here, as it really is one of the things that stands out most in his books.

One of my favorite new series. It was nice to see a truly dark Royce (my favorite kind of character) and seeing Gwen's back story was a pleasant surprise. I'm disappointed there's only one more to read.
adventurous
medium-paced
This book was ... something I haven't read so far. The pacing was really, really weird - like the Crown Tower thing was happening during the last 100 pages and before it was just ? something? I can't really explain it, but I thought about not finishing the book because it was sooooooooooo slow at the beginning. And then
Royce Melborn. He was by far my favorite character in the book and I'd probably die for the sneaky bastard. His interactions with Hadrian are funny (I'm not even sure this is intentional though) and I couldn't stop laughing at some points.
And with his appearance in the story (somewhere in the middle of it), the story pacing became faster and more interesting. Hadrian is an okayish character, I guess? He seems blank next to Royce, but I get why he is like this. It does work out for the story in the end. The ending had me bawling like a child because the character development is really great.
-1 star because of the really weird pacing. And Gwen's storyline? That was honestly so weird and sometimes I felt like plot points came too convenient for the characters.
I honestly can't wait to grab the next book.

Why does the major love interest need to be a prostitute? Why are the female characters in this fantasy world populated with princesses, prostitutes or bar maids? Could there possibly be female wardens, scholars, fighters, magistrates, artists? When Gwen and other women escape the murderous clutches of their pimp, what is the first thing they do? Go across the street and open up another bigger better brothel, of course.
Actually I have a lot of problems with Gwen as a character. Her reason for her existence, her moving, her suffering is all so that she can be there when Royce turns up bleeding needing help. This is her MISSION given by a god. Whelp.
