Good storyline, nice pacing and extraordinary twists and turns! Another good one from Barclay - Never Look Away is still my favorite from him though, but this one had a nice plot. After Lee Child and Stephen King, this guy is my go-to for a good thriller!
I’d just like to point out that the synopsis provided on the physical copy of TOO CLOSE TO HOME not only tells a few lies about the story, but actually spoils something. If you read the description, the first thing it tells you is that the Cutter family were meant to die instead of their neighbours; however, this idea isn’t even directly referenced until halfway through the book, and is not revealed until the end, making the blurb a spoiler.
Still, though, this isn’t a bad book. I didn’t enjoy it too much at first, but it slowly got better. I like Barclay as an author, and understand that he was probably under a lot of pressure when writing the follow-up to the phenomenon NO TIME FOR GOODBYE, so I can understand why this isn’t as gripping.

That ending!! enjoyed this audiobook immensely for just buying it because it was on sale. A GREAT mystery!
Believable characters, intriguing premise, interesting situations, reveals and a plot that isn't too far out there. A very good and exciting summer read.

The cliffhanger at the end of each chapter made me want to keep going even if the plot was abit patent. Regardless of that i still enjoyed it. Pretty mediocre but better than the girl on the train i guess.
This book was an absolute roller coaster but not one I’m sure I enjoyed.
The first chapter is amazing, a witty original idea that hooked me right away and made me read the first 1/4 of the book at least in one sitting. The author literally throws you this way and that and just when you think you see where the plot is going it does a complete u turn, which I liked. It kept me engaged and guessing.
What really spoiled the book for me however, was the amount of unnecessary detail. Setting a scene is all well and good, but I found it really odd how Jim Cutters lawn business and yard work was described in meticulous and excruciating detail. There were several paragraphs where the author went to town describing a certain thing or action (the police man trying to pull a napkin out of a dispenser...but failing because the dispenser was overstuffed!?)that had no relevance to the story and literally halted the speed of the story for me and in the case of the entire pages on lawn mowing - made me want to fall asleep.
I did enjoy the amount of secrets that came to light within the family and the little side stories that unravelled. However, we find out something huge: that the sons best friends mother slept with him, and it’s never mentioned again!? Characters are concerned about it for about 5 minutes and then we return to a different plot, which I found really strange? There was also the entire deal with his earring which is mentioned to be missing since day 1... only to be told by the police they could not get any DNA evidence from it and it’s just swept away with other important details we needed.
Overall I thought it was a really original and gripping idea for the book but I thought the author tried to cram way too many sub plots into it and a random amount of detail. The book amped up towards the end and I found a lot of the characters quite witty and likeable but the way the speed of the book raced ahead and then suddenly came to a stop constantly made me not want to finish it at all.
