I don't think I could give this anything other than five stars. I don't remember books well if I read them a while ago, but I remembered this book despite reading it a forever ago. It was nice to listen to it again, and maybe it wasn't as magical as it was in my memory, but I still adored it.
This is clearly a 4 ⭐️ read, it was good i loved it, but the brother’s death was too sad for me, and i clearly wanted him to live.
Stories about kids living on their own is right up my alley, and I'm very sad that this was absent from my library during my childhood. Just like My Side of the Mountain and Julie of the Wolves, this is a story about a girl surviving on her own for years on end. I loved the writing and first person narrative, which perfectly suited the story. The writing was descriptive but simplistic, too and very straight forward. It was easy to relax while reading about Karana's methods for hunting or training birds. A little melancholy, but a great book for anyone who likes adventure and a little solitude.
A classic for a very good reason- wonderful, profound and thoughtful.
Just re-read this story. While the five stars on this review refer to how I felt about this book when I first read it as a child, it does hold up in adulthood. It's a very sad story, all told, but riveting. I highly recommend for young people.

Re-read this. I think I first read it in 4th grade. What an unexpected pleasure to have it be as wonderful as I remembered.

A short read I wanted to revisit from childhood. I did not know this is loosely based on a true story. Narration was well done.
Short, faster, recommended read -- gets you thinking about isolation and nature. Never knew this book was based on the fact that an Indian girl spent 18 years on an island by herself, off the coast of California, in the early 1800s.
