When will Proteus be #MeToo’d?!!! So not a gentleman!!!

My two stars go to the awesome clown and obviously our favorite Elizabethan doggy Crab.

This was one of my first non-High School Required Shakespeare plays I’ve read, and so I think I can safely say I thought it sucked BEFORE I read a decent amount of Shakespeare. I like thinking that Proteus and Valentine are just in guy love and their female ‘love’ obsessions are just secondary antics, and at least Valentine calls out Proteus. But the ending was just so hasty and weird. I bet people thought it was weird then too.

I'd say this is a "weak" representation of what Shakes can do tactically and it's still brilliant. Weak doesn't exactly describe it since weak Shakespeare is levels above almost all other writers works, but it's not as strong as other plays he's written later. I love the youthful feel of the play, a Shakespearean BroMance and RomCom (totes my jam). It's witty and somewhat dark at the perfect times, but incredibly funny as well. A good balance. The depth is perfect for an intro into Shakespeare. I always get excited when I see a monologue coming, and I had to read Julia's several times for the passion and conflict. For my first Shakespearean play in a few years (and first time reading TGOV), I'm excited to read the rest.

Proteus is such a despicable piece of trash ugh. Really enjoyed how the dialogue was fluid in this play.

when the complete works basically says, "hey, at least there are some good parts," you know it's bad. yes, there are some good parts (lance and crab my beloveds), but i won't lie. it isn't good! it's not good.

What I knew of this play was from Shakespeare in Love - "Laughter and a bit with a dog" - it's the play where we first see Viola watching Shakespeare.

It was... Shakespeare, but very early Shakespeare! I think it is one of the ones that would REALLY benefit from performance.
