We’ve been too hard on George Lucas.

Jones does a fantastic job of not just chronicling Lucas’ life, but placing that life (and Lucas’ accomplishments) within the context of film history. I especially loved learning more about Lucas and Coppola’s unpredictable relationship.

It also made me happy to read how Lucas’ priorities changed after Return of the Jedi (and his divorce around that time). He decided that the most important job in his life wasn’t filmmaking, but fatherhood. It’s kind of the opposite of what see at the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Indy spent most of his life in pursuit of accomplishment, adventure, and treasure—at the expense of a family. While Indy gets his relationships back, part of me wonders if the wasted time represents a sort of nightmare for Lucas. A horrible “What if” that he nearly lived out himself.

Anyways, I highly recommend this!

Wonderful piece of work. Part of my viewpoints of Biographies is that they have balance celebrating/acknowledging the parts of what make them biography worthy while also discussing potential deficiencies. I think this books does that wonderfully, especially on the idea of creative control which drives much of George Lucas and his life. I feel like I learned a lot from this book about his life, while constantly turning the page ready to read more.

Not just the story of George Lucas - also the story of the evolution in film production leading up to the digital age. Now off to re-watch the movies!

I really enjoyed and learned a lot from this. Brian Jay Jones’ writing is rly good at giving clear, interesting detail, and even tho the books are long they’re never boring imo. I liked it, but I would say you could sum it up as “George Lucas is extremely controlling artistically and difficult to work with, and it’s a miracle he’s as successful as he is as a result.” I liked that this acknowledged some of Lucas’s faults but also wasn’t aggressive and showed other sides of him too.
