Oblomov’s demise is both tragic and inevitable and a really interesting commentary on Russian society

A story of what life is all about, what purpose one should carry, how love is found and how to know if what one has found is in fact- love.
This book was a TOME and slow to get through at times, but the characters of Oblomov, Olga and Andrey are depicted so well and symbolize such distinct approaches towards life that my chest ached at times for each one.
Oblomov, our main character, is a piece of work. So used to being a master of the land and have everyone else tend to his needs that an aura of sluggishness envelops him. We follow his life as new encounters, relationships and conflicts pierce through that aura and witness his years all the way up to his last to see where he ends up.
I should emphasize, his laziness is the kind that made me want to put the book aside and take a stroll. And possibly gauge my eyes out with frustration. Multiple times. All in the span of the first 50 pages. He embodies lazyness and procrastination and letting life go by as he watches from a sofa. His character is a mockery to that state of humanity and Goncharov does a masterfull job at underlining it. And then highlighting it. And to be sure circling it a few times over on these pages.

Overall a slow but fantastic, tragic yet funny story to read.

Heel veel herkenning, zonder feest.

Herkenning in Oblomov zelf. Herkenning, herkenning, herkenning. Ik voel(de) me Oblomov. Deed ik het boek dicht, angst. Open, angst.

I'm completely ambivalent about this book. On one hand I loved it. The absurdity of the whole situation can be very confronting and makes you think. It even makes you laugh. What is brilliant is that Oblomow's life is so absurd that you keep thinking no one could ever be like this in real life. Or could they? Is it really that absurd?
But on the other hand I almost hated the book. I could get so frustrated while reading it. Gontsjarov is really taking his time to tell this story. And some of the characters are such idiots. I just wanted to crawl into the book and slap them in the face.
But overall it was a good book and I could recommend it. I suppose it's a good thing books can get you frustrated.

I love this book with all of my heart. It was funny, it was sad and frustrating. I was upset with the main character and felt bad for him and understood him...and sometimes didn't want to understand him...and didn't want to relate to him and finding my own thoughts between the pages, my own feelings. There are moments this books make you feel hopeful, there are moments you feel hopeless. This book about a person slowly killing himself, in the slowest, most miserable way possible, will love or friendship help him to save himself or it is all lost for him?..
