I really tried to finish this book, but the plot was all over the place and I could not relate to any of the characters. Even the dialog seemed so disjointed. Put it down a little over half way in.

Not sure if having previous familiarity with "The Necklace" would help, but overall: meh

A good book. Maybe better suited for the ennui of the 20-somethings coming to grips with the fact that they can't live their college lives forever than for a late-30-something. But the premise was fun, even if the messages were a bit murky.

There was a lot to like about this book. While I couldn't convince myself to LOVE it, I did enjoy the read. Perhaps if it it hadn't been billed as a "caper"? It's more coming-of-age-later-than-you-ought-to ...

It had potential but some plot lines seemed a bit rushed or not fully flushed out to me. I didn't love how the book ended, there wasn't enough resolution with multiple characters' development.

God, I've been with this book for quite a while. And that's coz I took a break in between and also coz the book drags itself in the middle. I love Crosley's writing, but this book did it to me. The plot goes in pointless circles created only to increase the page count and there is no point to the plot at the end. The writing is easy but not enough to keep you going through the book.

Would've been a Two star, but the extra star is only because I could finish the book and not give up.

Damn, can Sloane Crosley write a perfect sentence. She has a way of writing perfect pithy lines and casual, smart one-liners that fit perfectly into the middle of serious paragraphs. Her perfectly-timed humor and her gift for dialogue make me jealous. But the Maupassant references seemed a little heavy-handed at first. And this book contains one of the least sexy sex scenes I've ever read. That's not a criticism, though - this is definitely a fun read.

Probably 3.5 stars--fun and readable, though probably won't stay with me long.

Victor is a car crash. It's hard to read, I find myself wincing through it like I'm watching a Ben Stiller comedy.
The dialogue is decent and reminiscent of the tone of the author's nonfiction essays, which I loved.
The plot is interesting if not unbelievable at times.
I'm more than halfway through and don't see how Victor is going to turn into a redeemable character or have anything resolved by the end, short of deus ex machina.

spoiler: he doesn't. but it sounds like from reading the author's note at the end, that's sort of the point? I don't know. meh. it seems like white privilege is the deus ex machina, with no acknowledgment that this is the case, which is a little more self-absorbed than I can take in present times.

Enjoyed the writing and character development! Not the most exciting plot, but it kept my attention and was quite enjoyable.
