I purchased this book when the author was making an extra donation to blind cat rescue. It's been sitting on a shelf waiting to be read. I was actually scared to read it. I was afraid it would be too upsetting. I was really wrong. It was very uplifting! While there were a few chapters that caused me to cry, overall, it was a very sweet story about a feisty cat and his wonderful spirit! I can't say it has made a huge impact on my view of the world except that when the time comes to adopt an animal, I will be more than willing to adopt one who I might not have considered otherwise. And that is enough of an impact.

I loved this book. Even though I cried my eyes out I couldn't wait to read more and more. This story is so wonderfully touching. If you are an animal lover this is a must read.

True story. Gwen already had two cats when her vet called about a kitten who had lost his eyes to infection. She couldn't resist. Homer never let his blindness stop him. He was fearless--once scaring off a burglar. He could catch flies in mid-air and smell tuna in a sealed can--in the cupboard. When Gwen moved from Miami to NYC, her cats, including Homer, moved too. They survived 9/11, even though Gwen couldn't get to them for several days after. Scarlett, Vashti, and Homer were a team--if a reluctant one at times on the part of the other cats. Even a long-time bachelor who disliked cats wasn't immune to Homer's charms for long.

Great story and very moving. Couldn't put it down.

When a two-week old kitten was found and brought into Patricia Khuly’s veterinary office, she refused to euthanize him, in spite of the fact that she had to remove his eyes because of a severe eye infection. The kitten bounced back well from the surgery and seemed to have a sweet spirit. Dr. Khuly had worked with blind cats before and knew this one could live a full life, since it had never seen and wouldn’t know what it was missing out on. She couldn’t find anyone to take this kitten and, out of desperation, called Gwen Cooper.

Gwen agreed to take a look at the kitten, but made no promises, since she already owned two cats. Upon seeing the kitten, Gwen was smitten and agreed to take him, thus changing her life forever. She named the tiny little kitten Homer after the Greek poet. I admire Gwen and her willingness to adopt a cat no one else wanted. Homer is a sweet, adventurous cat who loves everyone and sometimes frightens Gwen with his fearlessness.

Homer’s Odyssey by Gwen Cooper is the story of Gwen’s life with Homer and her other two cats. As an animal lover, I fell in love with Homer and his sweet, adventurous spirit. He amazed me with his ability to adapt and his love of life.

This book started out with a bang for me, but dragged a little bit by the end. I realize that it was important to know about Gwen’s life in order to understand some of what was going on in the life of her cats, but I felt like the end of the book focused on Gwen and her relationship too much. Without Homer, her life wasn’t all that different from anyone else’s, so the end of the book didn’t pull me in the way the beginning did. I still enjoyed the book and would recommend it to animal lovers.

i laughed, i cried, i am a changed woman.

This book wasn’t really unlike other books people have written about pets or animals who’ve touched lives, but it has a uniqueness to it in the fact that it’s about a blind cat. I also was very touch by the love the author has for her cats. It makes you wish that all people loved their animals like this. With the amount of individuals who treat animals terribly, it’s always nice to find someone who loves their pets as they would another human being.
I don’t think I know of many stories about blind cats, and I don’t think I’ve met a blind cat either, but I would love too. I was so fascinated by how much love and how little fear Homer had. And how well developed his senses were. He adapted very quickly everywhere he went. Growing up with two parents who are blind gives me even more appreciation for this cat. Heck, I probably would have adopted him as well. It also helped me know that, his senses adapting wasn’t that much a miracle, but it commonly happens when other senses are weakened. How fast he was able to adapt though was amazing. I know when moving to new places, it’d take a bit for them to get to 100% know the area, but this cat learned in only a couple days.
While this story wasn’t much different from other Of it’s kind, I think it really teaches an important lesson that, a person or an animal may have a handicap of some sort, but that doesn’t make them incapable of living life as someone who is “normal”.
