5/5 stars:

I am so completely in love with Runaways since I watched the show at the beginning of the summer and I am so glad my best friend Jaime gave me this as a birthday gift so I could read it.

They fit my favorite trope of all time -found families- perfectly and I also adore Karolina/Nico -WHAT A MAGNIFICENT OTP- so I can't wait to read the next volume when it comes out.

I'm getting WicDiv vibes, but YA with more found family and less sex and gore.

I reread the original run for the first time in a decade before reading this volume, and I'd forgotten how much I loved it, and I'm so glad it's continuing. There's a sadness and a complexity to this volume that adds so much to these characters.

I always loved Gert--she's one of the few teenage characters I've read who looked like me and wasn't a.) a gross monster who was constantly eating, or b.) a sad loser with zero self-worth who was obsessed with her weight, needed to be fixed...and constantly eating. But on my reread, I LOVED Chase and how that relationship was originally written. The take on Chase here in particular does his character such a service, and I'm really excited to read more.

Although really, one of my favorite comic series by one of my favorite authors? This really could not have gone wrong for me.

LOVE the illustrations. And if I had read and/or remembered the Runaways from the early 2000s, I would have LOVED seeing this series picked up again - especially by Rainbow Rowell. I think I’ll go back and reread them this winter!

Freaking adorable and I just loved the art. I missed these guys. This volume was obvs an introduction, and I'm pretty sure the action will ramp up. Bring on vol. 2!

I never read the original story, but I love this art style and also adore Rainbow Rowell, so...graphic novel time! Even though I obviously missed some serious context for what's happening in this book (even tho it's volume 1) it was still an enjoyable and engaging read. I might go back and read the original run to get a better idea of who these characters are, but safe to say, I'm in for the long haul now.

More like a 3.5, to be honest. I was a big Runaways fan, and I liked some of Rowell's novels, so seeing this pairing intrigued me. I guess it was pretty good, but I would need to see more. There are a few more volumes in this series, and I will eventually get to them. But, honestly, I am not in a great rush.

I never thought I'd be able to love the Runaways as much as BKV's run but Rainbow Rowell makes the strongest attempt yet. Cutting through the upheavals and crossover events that left them scattered, she gathers up the heart of their tangled teenager angst and crafts a reunion that perfectly encapsulates the odd found family that made them a unique superhero team book when they first came out.

I will say this arc is a lot heavier on the interpersonal dynamics and playing catch up than BKV, who managed to make a perfect single issue with a hook and a greater arc. Rowell is content to lay the building blocks, leaving small hints and one big villain to deal with in the six issues, but the humor suits the characters and Anka's artwork is amazing at capturing all the nuances of facial features alongside the giant superhero splash pages. This is the best inheritor of the original run I could think of, just unique enough and different in the characters to really be a progression of their story rather than another attempt at capturing the initial magic.

SpoilerAnd any panel that could inspire a spin-off like this deserves to be read
