first of all.... I love Noah sooo much and his suffering makes me so sad and add in the fact that no one ever seems to talk about it... blasphemy!!! also, the fact that Mara was suspected of killing all the "Gifted" is not really a surprise, but really? And when Noah cuts his hand and mara was like "I'm done", my heart almost broke. Lastly, when they really did break up at the end, I actually cried; then BAM here's Mara's "dead" grandmother !!! I think I almost went crazy from this book. (Also Jamie WHAT ARE YOU DOING?????)
First of all this has a TRIGGER WARNING so it's certainly not for everyone one. This was pretty crazy and I wasn't so sure what to expect. I like how Noah has his own trilogy. I kinda didn't want to believe the things mentioned (don't want to spoil anyone) but damnnn. The last few pages are intriguing. I think the whole thing has a lot of mysteries waiting to be revealed for the next one so naturally, I'll be waiting for the next one.
This book definitely feels like an opening book vs a book 4. I mean, I know it's technically book one in the spin off, but it's the same characters, just told from Noah's perspective instead of Mara's. So, I loved that this book was told from his perspective because I am obsessed with him in general, but I did miss Mara's perspective a lot. So, my wish would be for the next book to be in dual perspective. Even though Mara is supposed to be evil and all that jazz or whatever, I love her. The bond between her and Noah is great, but I feel like the lack of trust tarnishes it slightly since they aren't honest with each other. A new character named Goose, yes Goose, was freaking awesome! Jamie got on my nerves for some reason. As with this whole series, I am still slightly confused, but it picks up drastically in the last few chapters. I can't wait to see what's going to happen next and hopefully not be as confused! I know people say trigger warnings and all that, but as someone that has dealt with suicide first hand, it didn't bother me in the slightest.
I'm lost. I feel like it went super fast. I'm guessing there will be more so I'm hoping things will be one clearer.
3 Stars-
That ending though, WHATT??
The pacing of this book was really strange. It was also way different being in Noah’s head versus Mara’s and I don’t know if I liked it. Even though this book was at least 100 pages shorter than any of the Mara Dyer books, it took me way longer to read. I miss the uncertainty of being in Mara’s head and that was part of what I really loved about this story.
This book isn’t bad, but it’s paced weird, boring in others, and it’s not Mara Dyer...

This is one of those books I had to keep making myself power on through to get to the end. There were a few entertaining bits, and Noah's personality is on par with my love of snarky and witty narrators, but I never really connected with any of the characters in this book. There was a crap-ton of telling in this book, and I think that probably attributed to my lack of connection with the MCs.
Overall, the plot is pretty good, I wanted to keep going to see what the big mystery was and I wasn't disappointed when I got to the end. It was a solid twisty ending.
Ultimately, I have to rate this book as just okay. Not good or bad, just meh.
I may or may not read the other books in the series, but they sure moved a lot further down my TBR list.

Noah Shaw’s father is dead, but now he’s left seeing Gifted like him and Mara committing suicide. Not only can he feel it, see their last moments, hear their last thoughts, he knows they don’t want to die.
With Mara, his childhood friend Goose, and a handful of other characters from the series, Noah sets out to find the reason behind all the reluctant suicides.
Old characters make a return, new characters are introduced, and once again we are thrown into a psychological blender.
I definitely should have reread the Mara Dyer trilogy before starting this one. I loved Mara Dyer, but for the life of me I can’t remember anything from it, which made reading Noah Shaw difficult. It essentially starts off where Mara Dyer ended, which isn’t what I expected. I anticipated a retelling, almost, of Mara Dyer from Noah’s point of view. I’m not sure why, I can’t justify that expectation.
The fact that it starts off as a new chain of events was interesting. Mara is still around, but the fact that we aren’t in her head anymore makes her elusive and almost scary. Noah is very different from Mara, and while I think Shaw did a great job with his voice, I greatly prefer Mara’s point of view. Something about being in the shoes of a character who thinks they’re crazy is riveting.
One thing that is very Noah but also really put me off were his suicidal ideations. So trigger warning for that, if you want to read this series.
Overall, it’s not a bad spinoff series, but it’s not as great as the original content.

I was nervous going into this because I’ve seen more negative reviews than I expected, but man I really really enjoyed this. I’m also very glad I reread the whole trilogy right before reading this - if I hadn’t I definitely don’t think I would have enjoyed it as much because I would have been too confused. Being in Noah’s head was so different from being in Mara’s and I’m so glad that Michelle Hodkin decided to give Noah his own story. (I also would love some additional POV chapters for Mara and Jamie - if you’ve read it, I’m sure you know why). So much happened in this book and I really want to get my hands on the next one ASAP.
Graphic: Suicidal thoughts, Suicide
good but not fantastic
This definitely wasn't horrible. But I think if you're expecting something amazing, you may be disappointed. I was really looking forward to this because Noah is hands-down my favourite character from the Mara Dyer trilogy. I think his voice was written really well, and it didn't feel like his narration was just thrown together for the sake of the fans.
If you didn't know, this takes place after the events of the Mara Dyer trilogy, told in Noah Shaw's point of view.
But if you asked me the plot, I don't know what I would tell you. After Retribution, I really felt like Mara as a character was wrapped up really nicely, but this just opens her up all over again, and it's weird that it takes place from Noah's point of view. He really is the character that needs his own series, but I felt like it wasn't utilized the way it should've been. Noah's "problems" in this are so mundane and don't have much to do with the previous trilogy. Meanwhile Mara... continues to be Mara.
It was just kinda weird.
I will continue the series, because I'm total trash for Mr. Noah Shaw the love of my life, and the ENDING really leaves me with many questions (that will hopefully be answered). It just felt like this 380 page book could've had a lot more significance and a lot less standing around. So I feel good with 3/5 stars.
EDIT 2/1/18: what even happened in this book? I don't remember. 2.5/5.
