Now that I am reading this book, as an adult, it is pretty sad. Ol boy was selfish. Maybe in another stage of life this book will have another meaning.

As a kid, you read this book and think nothing of it. I personally just saw it as unconditional love, but now that I'm older the beauty of this book stands out and truly breaks my heart. We all have been in a relationship whether it be dating, a friendship, or a familial relationship where someone stopped loving us but we can't help loving them. Where we give arms and legs to someone who wouldn't do the same. Reading this now is so sad, especially having gone through something much like this.

This is an incredibly moving and powerful book, but for all the wrong reasons. I love Shel Silverstein's books of poetry, and as much as I remember it, I have no problem with "The Missing Piece." But I have no idea why anyone thinks this an appropriate book for children, unless it's to teach them how NOT to behave. The child is selfish and abusive to the tree, and I cry every time I read it because of how awful he is and how such a beautiful relationship went so wrong. One friend of mine said the book made her angry at the tree, for being a maternal figure and being so taken advantage of. I don't take it that far - I'm just angry at the boy.

I also get angry every time I see this book proudly displayed in a bookstore as though it's a great book to give someone. Not in my world.

It was okay. I liked the message, but the writing and the illustrations were too simple.

One of my all time favorites. I read this to my kids a lot (try not to cry). It is about unconditional love and giving and kindness.
