This is a young adult book and I found it to be great for that age group and very enjoyable for me as an adult. I now can recommend this book as a moving story that should be read as part of understanding all peoples. This is fiction that very much draws from truths. I think it would be a great way to introduce you g adults to realities that happen within the indigenous communities and encourage them to find out more about the subject covered in this story.
I really wanted to love this book! I read it as I needed a book for my book bingo’s indigenous author prompt, and I had heard a lot about this book, so it seemed a perfect match. My issues with this book are definitely on me. The cover looks like a fantasy cover, and I am terrible of reading what books are about before reading them so I quickly got confused about where the fantasy was. Totally on me! The idea of the book as a mystery / thriller though I did enjoy. I don’t know hardly anything about indigenous cultures, and I love to learn. I found my knowledge expanded from this book. I think my main issue was I didn’t particularly feel for any of the characters and found a lot of what happened unbelievable (I know its fictional but STILL) I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this.
I really really wanted to like this book. On paper it should’ve been a favorite. I found it incredibly monotonous for 3/4 of the novel. Same thing over and over. The main character frustrated me as well, though I couldn’t tell you why honestly. However, I loved the representation of the Native culture. It was so detailed and immersive. I really appreciated reading it, even if the plot of the book I found lack luster.
Ahh so so good! I don't think anything I could say would properly encapsulate the beauty, the vibrance, the heartbreak of this story. It is so important. It is so deserving of all the hype and more. Please read this. It deals with difficult topics but it deals with them so gently and carefully and it is just a tapestry of emotions, culture, twists, misery and joy and depth. Just... ahh. Please read this. That is all.
Loved it. Didn't want it to end and wish it was a series.
I really liked this book...especially the 2nd half. I really enjoyed the interesting contemporary perspective of Native American life with its struggles and joys. The mystery was complex and the answers well hidden and slowly revealed. I just wish the entire book was as good as the 2nd half. It just dragged and felt too drawn out.
