What an excellent book. Not only were the story (mystery) and characters well thought out, but I loved the indigenous knowledge and sense of place the book provided. I struggled somewhat with the repetitive aspect of the story or retelling of events throughout, which was more for the YA audience. I could have also done without some of the violence that happened although I appreciate the issue it was raising by including this (although I felt overall it could have potentially been left out - jury’s still out here). This is definitely a book that gives insight into current challenges and triumphs experienced by indigenous communities. I recommend it.

I’m conflicted about this one. I think it’s a fantastic book and it doesn’t such an excellent job of sharing Native American culture it also packs an interesting story line. All that said, I found myself a little bored in places and I wasn’t rushing to get back into the book each day. Overall I’ll still give it a 4 because I could see scenarios where I would recommend it.

Not knowing how to pronounce a lot of the words was a struggle, but switching between reading the book and listening to the audiobook was helpful!
I think the representation was wonderful and I loved reading about the different native traditions, beliefs, etc.
Daunis was an amazing character and the plot was not what I was expecting in a good way!
