A dark and powerful story of the impacts of drugs and laws designed without consideration for those who were here first. Worth every second of flinching and heart racing.

The most I've gotten pulled into a book in a while, I always kind of forget how much I like mysteries/thrillers. The setting was absorbing. Lots of horrible things happen but there is still a lot of joy in this book. I loved Daunice's relationship with the Elders and the way they supported each other. I wasn't so sure about the romance and I liked that she decided she needed the mental room to figure her own life out in the end. A few kind of cheap cliffhangers.

The book was a little bit of a slow start. There are a lot of characters to keep track of. However, the story telling was SO GOOD. It is gut wrenching and real. Daunis talks about her identity in a way that feels relatable.

This book was perfect! Intresting themes, plot and characters. It was really fun to be immersed in Daunises culture. The writing style was so easy to read. This isn't my usuall genre and this book felt really refreshing.

4,5 stars - Starting this I didn't know what to expect at all. I am a little unfamiliar with indigenous cultures and this was the first time I picked up a book touching the subject. Let me tell you, I learned so much!

Apart from it being a informing read, it had lots of elements of a crime novel, a tiny little bit 'enemies' to lovers, family dynamics and women empowerment. It sounds like a lot, but it didn't feel like it. It all merged into a genre of it's own and the pacing was perfect. It also didn't read like a YA story at all!

One reason why I love this book (and others like it) so much is bc I don't experience close family bonds or really cultural traditions. Reading about Daunis and her family and tribe makes me feel included in those things, and it's comforting in a way. does that make sense?

I wanted to rate this 5 stars, but I needed a tiny little bit more of the romance in there. I really liked Jamie as a character. Though I understand why the author chose to go a certain route, I hoped for a little bit more. Also because Daunis deserves happiness!
