This book was perfect! Intresting themes, plot and characters. It was really fun to be immersed in Daunises culture. The writing style was so easy to read. This isn't my usuall genre and this book felt really refreshing.
4,5 stars - Starting this I didn't know what to expect at all. I am a little unfamiliar with indigenous cultures and this was the first time I picked up a book touching the subject. Let me tell you, I learned so much!
Apart from it being a informing read, it had lots of elements of a crime novel, a tiny little bit 'enemies' to lovers, family dynamics and women empowerment. It sounds like a lot, but it didn't feel like it. It all merged into a genre of it's own and the pacing was perfect. It also didn't read like a YA story at all!
One reason why I love this book (and others like it) so much is bc I don't experience close family bonds or really cultural traditions. Reading about Daunis and her family and tribe makes me feel included in those things, and it's comforting in a way. does that make sense?
I wanted to rate this 5 stars, but I needed a tiny little bit more of the romance in there. I really liked Jamie as a character. Though I understand why the author chose to go a certain route, I hoped for a little bit more. Also because Daunis deserves happiness!

I’m not sure what I expected from reading this, but to say I really enjoyed it would be underselling its value. The unraveling of the criminal activity throughout the community kept me on my toes the entire book. Rampant drug use is a real life issue, especially in native communities and I think the author did a great job at portraying the impact and how it can affect those closest to you.
My favorite scene from the book is the women’s circle at the end. Genuinely cried reading about all of these women coming together to heal their traumas together.
I related to Daunis on a personal level, as her parental story is quite similar to mine. I massively enjoyed her character and how her scientific brain works through problems.
At its core, this book is about strength and community and overcoming grief to see a better future for yourself and those around you. It is about strong women who may be fallible but will always find a way to continue on. Its a love story to the Sault Ste. Marie tribes and native culture.
Is it a perfect book? I would say no. There are definitely heavy topics that could be seen as too much for the teen genre. I think that even though we want to protect our youth from the harsh realities that happen every day, especially to women, its sometimes necessary to put these events to paper and show there are ways to overcome and heal.

Okay I finished this book last night and I can’t stop thinking about it. It was very well done! There were some parts of the plot that felt a bit unrealistic, but if you are willing to suspend your disbelief, it is absolutely worth it. The mystery was well done and I found myself crying with Daunis many times through the book. Loved learning about Ojibwe culture as well!

I don't like Jaime. That was my main issue with this book. I loved learning more about Native culture, I loved the setting as the Upper Peninsula is one of my favorite places to go, but I DON'T LIKE JAIME. He gives me Edward Cullen vibes and that's just a no.
Really fun mystery story packed with rich indigenous culture. I found myself thinking a lot about Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, learning more about the beauty and relationship between indigenous peoples and the earth. TW: drug abuse and death.

I wish the book wasn’t YA… I feel like there were emotions and reactions that I wanted from the characters that couldn’t be written in a YA format/would have been too “adult”. The parts where I learned about native culture was my favorite. Nothing really hooked me it was just ok, felt like I was reading to finish not because I enjoyed it. I think it did its job though and achieved what I think it wanted to achieve? A part of me thinks maybe this is low because I’m in a reading slump?
