I wasn’t expecting to love this book as much as I did but the story gripped me.

I loved the main character Dounis and following her through her grief and drive to protect her community. I loved being immersed in Anishinaabe culture and learning, even though through fiction, the issues affecting tribes of her region.

Well written although not exceptional

Since I am originally from Michigan, this story held a lot of meaning and memories for me. But you don’t have to be familiar with the area at all to enjoy this amazing young adult mystery.

Eighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. She dreams of a fresh start at college, but when family tragedy strikes, Daunis puts her future on hold to look after her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi’s hockey team.

This is a thrilling mystery steeped in the culture of the Objiwe Indian nation where the story takes place. I enjoyed it so much. I'd love to read more books like it! The narrator did an awesome job bringing these characters to life.

this was an incredible story. boulley really impressed me with the way she wrote and developed her characters. i really love a book that takes place in a small, close-knit community, where the characters are all a little messed up but so very real. that’s life. i didn’t see the direction this book was going at first (didn’t read the description oops), so i was pretty caught off guard when the plot picked up, but i was also immediately sucked in. i found myself actually able to predict some of the twists, but i think that’s a testament to proper foreshadowing.
this book was just entrenched in loss. at some points it was almost too much to bear, you feel as though the community or daunis has faced too much hardship and where else could they go? but there’s not and celebration in the community as well. one of the most poignant lines near the end: “we have faced worse than this, and we are still here.”

Compelling story. Stayed up way too late reading. The beginning is a bit slow. I switched to the audiobook and followed along on my kindle due to the many words I could not pronounce. Recommend it highly!

Smart and strong girl, protecting her Indigenous community against bad medicines. I loved the descriptions of her visions, intuition, and grounding. I loved the love of culture, and how sacred the elders are treated. Been waiting a long time for a great read like this.

Excellent. It led me along and knew exactly how to manipulate me as a reader, then use that to show me something valuable.
