Somewhat experimental in form, there's not like an actual plot so at times I was a little bored. But Torres is an excellent writer and I think I could learn from him, I want to read his other work.

I didn't realize until getting to the endnotes how much of this is nonfiction. The study, Sex Variants: A Study of Homosexual Patterns, is an actual book and the historical figures including Jan Gay were real people. This is fascinating and I want to research these now

Honestly I just didn't understand the message/story the author was trying to tell, so maybe it's my own fault I didn't like it as much as I hoped I would.

I thought the focus of the novel was going to be the relationship between Juan and Nene, but the majority of the book is them telling each other stories about other people. It's hard to connect with the main characters of a novel when 80% of the novel is about other made up characters. On top of not getting enough time with the Juan and Nene, the story was difficult to follow because none of the their stories are actually connected.

This one just really missed the mark me for me.

Blackouts is an experimental novel and an interesting read. It’s about a young man who seeks out an old friend and cares for him while he’s on his death bed. Together they share stories of their lives.

I wanted to like this one more than I did. The main issue I had was it felt confusing to follow at times. The stories felt dreamlike and disjointed which made it hard to be absorbed into the story.

The blacked out writings however were intriguing and formed thoughts and poems.

I can appreciate that this wasn’t a story with a wild plot and that its focus was on moments. But it was a little hard to follow given the huge twist at the end which made me triple guess what was real.

A wildly complex and stunning book. Made me feel very basic as a queer person and not very smart lol. But also I was deeply moved by many of its messages, especially how people’s history and legacies meld together and impact each other and the world around them, and how we’re never really alone, or dead, because of the impact we make.
