I'm still emotional. This is now one of my favorite books. At first I wasn't on board with the idea of Bridget falling in love with Charlie, it was really obvious it was going into that direction. I still feel like it was too soon. The poor guy just lost his wife the previous year. But at the same time, it made it more real in a way. Sometimes I needed more details on certain things, and of course no book can be perfect, but what I'm sure of is I adored the characters and loved the book despite its flaws.

Paige’s books are often filled with amazing characters and very strong female leads. I can’t really ask for more in a book like this one.

As with all of Paige’s books, characters turn up that you meet in other books. This time, we learn more about Bridget. Bridget is a travel-writer and she’s used to travelling the world. Bridget’s focus at the moment is her blog, where she’s recounting stories of meeting up with her ex-boyfriends to get the pieces of her heart back that she left with them. Bridget is back together with her first love and she’s determined to give all of her heart to him. Her agent likes her writing style and says it’s similar to another writer, Nicole. Unfortunately, Nicole has recently passed away. They want Bridget to write Nicole’s sequel to her highly successful book. If Bridget is successful, it will open the doors to her own book being published.

Bridget travels to Cornwall to meet Nicole’s husband. Nicole’s husband Charlie shows her the notes that she wrote for her sequel. Through reading Nicola’s notes, Bridget learns more about how she wanted the sequel to go.
Bridget finds that there are lots of similarities between her and Nicola, including feelings towards her husband, Charlie…

I absolutely warmed to Paige’s characters straight away. Bridget was fun and adventurous and often made me smile. Charlie was sweet and adorable with his baby daughter, April. I grew to love them both. Paige Toon sure knows how to write beautiful male characters. Charlie’s determination to bring up April made my heart swell. He was clearly struggling with juggling childcare, work and his grief. His story touched my heart.

This book is a great beach read and perfect for fans of women’s fiction. It has light humour but also a lot of depth between its pages. Yes, parts of it were predictable, but that really didn’t affect my enjoyment.

I’m already a huge fan of Paige and her writing, I first discovered her a few years ago and the first book I read by her ended up being my favourite; Pictures of Lily just struck a chord with me, it was in no way similar to my life, sadly, but I loved it all the same. However I can honestly say The Last Piece of My Heart will stay with me forever, it was simply stunning.

The Last Piece of My Heart follows Bridget a travel journalist who wants to become a writer. While travelling the world Bridget’s writes a witty romance blog about ex-boyfriends, falling in love and relationships, more specifically about break ups and how we lose a pieces of ourselves. When Bridget’s blog becomes an internet success she’s able to go back and visit her past partner’s to see if she can claim back the piece she left behind.

“The problem with giving your heart away to someone is that you never fully get it back.”

Bestselling author Nicole Dupre died before she could finish the sequel to her extremely popular book and Bridget has been asked to finish it. Bridget eagerly accepts and travels to Cornwall to hopefully get a better idea of what Nicole wanted in a sequel by looking through her notes and to meet her widow, Charlie.

What I loved most about this book was how Toon was able to perfectly balance such hard-hitting emotion and humour. Bridget was a fantastic main character, you got to see her visit some truly terrible ex-boyfriends, struggle with the pressure of trying to give the book millions of readers expect and build a relationship with grief-stricken Charlie.

The romance was my favourite part of the book, watching Bridget and Charlie slowly build a friendship and then a relationship was just beautiful. I laughed when Bridget finally made Charlie smile, I cried when Charlie cried, I honestly went on a little bit of a emotion roller-coaster. I completely devoured this book in two sittings and read it with a smile from ear to ear.

The Last Piece of My Heart is a gorgeous book filled with love, loss and hope. I laughed, I cried and laughed some more. Readers will be hooked from the first page and this story will stick with them long after reading.

i loved this so much.
i love paige toon’s books - something in my heart just resonates with her writing style and characters so much.

bridget and charlie’s love story is without a doubt one of my favourites.
i loved how we saw charlie slowly grieving and getting over his wife nicki who passed away a year ago and how he is still an amazing father to his daughter april.

i loved seeing bridget get closer to april while she got closer to charlie, and in a way it was a love story more of bridget finding a family with april and charlie than just a love story.

this was so beautiful, and i like how they dealt with bridget having to be nicki’s ghostwriter and how she finished the second half of her sequel that nicki didn’t finish before she died.
i loved that she was a travel writer.

this was such a beautiful book, and definitely one of my favourite romances.
this definitely ranks up high with if we could go anywhere, the minute i saw you and lucy in the sky.

loved it so much.

The light relief you need

I'm a sucker for a classic chick lit story and this didn't disappoint. I loved Bridget's character and how she was captured by April. Was totally caught up in Bridgets friendship with Charlie. Above all that it's made me want bbc to go back to Cornwall so bad!

UPDATE: 10th September 2019
Was just looking back over recent(ish) reads and this one was so meh that I couldn't keep it at a 3.75 rating, dropped to 3 stars - I love Paige Toon's writing but this book just wasn't it.

ORIGINAL REVIEW

The only reason this has made it to 4 stars is because I really like Paige Toon’s writing and I stayed up till midnight to finish this - which is no small feat for someone who’s been going to sleep by 9pm for the past couple of weeks.

I can’t remember what the titles of the other Paige Toon books I’ve read are, but I know there was a point where I was obsessed with her books. She writes well-drawn characters and develops plots which have me caring for the people in the novel. This particular one was a bit of a miss, I really liked Bridget and I think the romantic pairing were well suited - but the last part let me down. It felt quite rushed and the very ending especially felt clunky and shoved in. I will say that I loved that we got to see Bridget not only form a relationship with a guy, but also with a little girl who she feels such a strong connection with! I’d say this is a 3.75 just because it didn’t live up to my memories of Paige Toon but it was nice to get back into my usual reading habits and that’s thanks in no small part to this book.

Will Paige Toon ever write a book that I don’t love? The answer is no, probably not, because honestly I fall in love with every character and location she writes.

I loved the whole storyline behind it, a writer moving to Cornwall to ghost write a dead author’s long awaited sequel for her fans. I hadn’t read anything like that before. It was emotional, it pulled on my heartstrings, it made me cry. It had everything I wanted in this book. I absolutely adored Bridget, I loved the idea behind her own novel that she was working on, how she put herself out there to all of the men she’d loved before. And Charlie, oh Charlie. You could feel the pain he was feeling from losing his wife so young, it was heartbreaking, especially that scene where you find more about her actual death. And April. April has my whole heart. What an absolute gorgeous little girl, I just kept thinking of my own daughter whenever I read about her, and it made me just want to squeeze her in for a cuddle, both my daughter and April.

And of course, Paige always writes the perfect locations, and now I want to go to Padstow

3.5! I really don’t know where I stand with this book. I loved it at some points and at other times I just wanted the story to get on with it. I took abt 4 days to finish the book which is surprising because I never take that long but I also never thought to dnf it. I was very intrigued and I loved April even though the only word we get from her is ‘da’.

In this story we follow Bridget, who is a travel journalist with a relationship blog. Because of those she's being asked to ghostwrite a sequel to a popular book written by the late Nicki. And for that she has to move to Cornwall and go through Nicki's notes and her old diaries/notebooks. While doing that, she gets to know Nicki's husband Charlie and his daughter April.
I'm so happy this book exists. Ever since reading [b:The Longest Holiday|16000770|The Longest Holiday|Paige Toon|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1363007994l/16000770._SY75_.jpg|21762175] and [b:Thirteen Weddings|18280725|Thirteen Weddings|Paige Toon|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1394992094l/18280725._SY75_.jpg|25752669], I was so intrigued by Bridget and was so happy when I found out that she got her own story. I really enjoyed the aspect of her writing a book and going to all the places that are in the story to get inspired by them. I also liked the idea of Bridgets blog, where she meets up with her ex-boyfriends in order to get a piece of her heart back and to get closure. I absolutely loved Bridget in this story, she is such a fun and interesting character to follow and I loved how she was such a positive influence on Charlie and April.
Charlie was a very fascinating character to follow. The way he is with his daughter was just the most adorable thing ever. I fully understood his conflict throughout this story and really liked how he always put April first and never wanted to be disrespectful to his late wife's memory.
As much as I enjoyed this story, I do think that the ending felt a bit rushed. I felt like, that all of a sudden everything we were waiting for was happening all at once. And I also wanna say, as cute as the scene in Chapter 45 was (the one in the house) I would've had a massive heart attack and probably wouldn't have been that nice to her at first.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, especially since I already loved Bridget and Charlie so much. The story was super interesting to follow and the characters just adorable.
