"The Daemon Lover" is crazy and kinda sad and pathetic... like I feel bad for this narrator but at the same time it's like girl he doesn’t want you!! The narrator is chasing after a man the entire short after he abandons her on the day they are going to get married. I love the themes of society placing American domestic ideals of family on women and the narrator just spiraling endlessly going after "Jamie," even though he has heartlessly abandoned her. The characters the narrator interacts with while on her journey to find "Jamie" is so unsettling because you know they deem her with contempt. Like haha let's laugh at the 30 yr old lady who has been abandoned by her man. Let's laugh we watch her pathetically chase after him. Isn't it hilarious how crazy SHE looks? Not one character treats her with sympathy :( honestly I think I love this short just as much as the lottery!!

A very interesting story . An unnamed woman waits for her groom to show up. Hours pass, he's a no-show so she goes looking for him.
The horror here is rooted in a sense of increasing anxiety. Small details are magnified. the tension is high and keeps growing with very encounter. The woman is unnamed in her own narrative and it feels like she's constrained by conventions -her frantic dressing and anxiety. In contrast, the groom even though absent has both identity (borrowed from a Scottish ballad) and agency.

woman gets stood up by a demon/devil/incubus/evil being/demonic spirit/(?) on her wedding day and goes on a wild goose chase to find out where he is.
one thing that i find, well, not necessarily funny, but almost comically weird is that the questioning of the fmc became more and more dissociated from reality as she continues to think about where he would be and what he could be doing, misleading herself and the people she questions about who they could have seen.
that being said, the people she asked didn't necessarily look/feel so eager to help her out â•®(╯_â•°)â•

Shirley Jackson knows how to tether her readers. I can’t even be sure if I loved the story or if I loved her ability to do that. Probably the latter. Definitely the latter.
Read one way, this is nothing more than a woman whose supposed fiance never turns up at the time they had planned to go be married. Read another, it's a horror story about neglect. The main reason I didn't care for it was the all-too-accurate portrayal of the people she asks for help along the way, who help only reluctantly, and are all to quick to laugh at her.
It's interesting the numerous ways in which this tale can be interpreted...
